Maine June 20-27, 2009

Day 1 – Saturday – June 20th

…..and we’re off to Portland Maine today June 20, 2009.

A rocky start…

This was the first time we have ever been paged at the airport with “last call for boarding for K&RS!” Yes, that last email from Airtran seemed to get un-noticed – the one where they moved the flight up an hour. We received a couple emails which indicated the flight changed within minutes of the scheduled time but then I guess R stopped looking at them.  Poor R – I think this was his job for keeping up with this.  Another lesson learned “always double check those flight change emails”  We realized it when we were checking our bags and the attendant said we were one minute late for bag check in.  Luckily for us we made it to the plane and were safely on our way.  Our luggage arrived with us – thank goodness for that.  Airtran is a fantastic airline and it was totally our fault for not checking.

We picked up the rental car at the airport and headed to our first destination which was “Reds Eats” in Wiscasset.  The lobster roll was vey good and we also got a moon pie to split which was good too.  The line wasn’t too long there – we spent about 35 minutes in line.  There were some horrible little flying bugs called midges which were biting us while we were waiting in line.  I was surprised that the sandwhich was a cold one – it was heaped with lobster though and quite tasty.  The price was $45.00 for two lobster rolls and one moon pie.  There were no sides or drinks included in that price.  Wiscasset is also known as the prettiest village in Maine .Image

We followed Rt 1 (got turned around in Brunswick) and arrived in New Harbor to check into the Gosnold Arms, which is located almost across the street from the Hardy Boat Cruise.  The Gosnold is a charming lodge and we stayed in the Birch cottage.  It is a very rustic little place with a fridge and microwave.  The price was very economical at 120.00 per night.  It is situated in a very scenic area.

We walked over to the dock and had a drink at the bar while waiting to board the Hardy Boat Puffin cruise.  We watched some men unload a boat with their catch of the day and watched as they weighed the lobsters and stored them under the dock.

The Puffin tour was great.  Tom the guide was very knowledgeable and made the trip a most interesting one.  It was very cold on that boat and I wished that I would have brought a hat and gloves. We saw many puffins and other birds native to the area.  After we got back, we had crab cakes and chowder at Shaw’s Restaurant which is located on the dock. Image
