Arrival: National Monuments & American Icons

Sometimes nothing can be better than a family vacation especially to Washington DC ! After landing at the Reagan Washington National Airport in DC, or the conveniently surrounding Dulles Airport or BWI airport close to Baltimore , MD , your family’s historical journey in the city of American Icons begins. Metro lines can help streamline your trip with numerous trains servicing the metro DC, VA and MD areas.  Shuttle buses from any of the three airports will make stops at Metro stations so your family can take the orange line right to the Foggy Bottom neighborhood where your hotel is located. Once you arrive at the George Washington University Inn, be sure to request one of their luxury efficiency suites to compliment your family’s need for relaxation and entertainment space during your stay.  Relax in your private Williamsburg inspired living room and get some sleep before your whirlwind tour of DC begins!

The National Mall should be one of the first and most anticipated sites during your stay.  A quick ride on the orange line to the Smithsonian station brings you to the National Mall, designed by L’Enfant, which remains one of the oldest, protected pieces of land and home to our nation’s treasures.  Capture some family photos along the maple tree-lined park where the Washington Monument , Lincoln Memorial and World War II and Vietnam Memorials serve as elegant American backdrops.  A White House tour and walk up the steps of the Capitol Building can bring life to American democracy where our nation’s laws are created and reviewed each day. The National Mall stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to Capitol Hill and is sure to thrill a family of all ages with its timeless American icons.  A retreat from the sun can be found at any one of the 19 Smithsonian Museums located all around the National Mall where stories of Space travel, Native American history and Presidential portraits come alive. There is always room for lunch to energize your crew at Cascade Café at the National Gallery of Art. Enjoy light lunch fare and refreshments before touring their outdoor sculpture garden and some of the greatest art collections from around the world. After a long day of walking around, returning to your luxury efficiency suite at George Washington University Inn and lounging in the inviting living room is well deserved. As the afternoon sun sets, Old Ebbitt Grill, a former favorite of Presidents Grant, Cleveland, Harding and Theodore Roosevelt is a great place for a memorable dinner.  Designed with old beer steins and game said to have been nabbed by Theodore Roosevelt himself, the decor conjures up a classic aesthetic just steps from the White House gates.  If you are driving, the valet parking is complimentary after 6pm and all day on Sunday.
