We choose the route via Slovenia to drive from Vienna to Trieste. It seemed nice to stop for short breaks in Maribor and Ljubljana on the way.
We probably didn't find the nicer parts of Maribor, but this city wasn't very fascinating. We stopped just for a couple of minutes to make a short walk down to the river, the Drava. The swans are obviously very used to humans and were expecting food, what we couldn't provide.
More interesting than the swans were those sunken trolleys, used as small islands by some ducks.
In Ljubljana we were more lucky. Our little blue friend the GPS receiver showed us the way to the national theatre, where we left the car. From there we made a short walk to the pedestrian area. It must have been the down town what we've seen.
We weren't lucky in terms of weather conditions. The forecast was unfortunately right and it was light raining and a little cold.
Ljubljana is a very beautiful city and definetely worth staying longer than just an hour or so.
At night this city has a strong preference for blue illumination: every other building was lighten up in bright blue light. Most spectacular is lighting around the castle on the hill.
Actually we were thinking that it would've been nice to stay a night in Ljubljana instead of Trieste. Next time.
