Day 1

Today we left from my boyfriend's hometown of Fitzgerald, GA for our sweeping tour of the Southeast. Heading off towards Montgomery, AL, we stuck to the backroads for a more interesting drive. Stopped just over the Alabama border for lunch at Michelle's, a southern-style buffet restaurant. It. Was. Awesome. Clean, delicious, lots of variety, and an extensive dessert bar (my favorite part!). Made it to Montgomery at about 2 PM, a little too late to tour very many sites. The hotel was easy to find and right off the interstate, making travel into downtown very convenient.

Our first stop was the Visitor's Center, where we parked for free and the BF enjoyed the complimentary coffee. The lady at the Center was very informative and answered all of our questions (including where one could purchase a Montgomery Biscuits t-shirt, the city's minor league team; as soon as the BF found out what the mascot was, he had to get a shirt!). There are two narrated trolley routes that run throughout the downtown area; to ride both takes a bit over an hour (without getting on and off) and the round-trip fare is only 50 cents per person. This is the best way to see all the city's sights and museums. We didn't partake (it was getting late in the evening and we're young and spry and felt like walking after driving all day), but we did mosey around town for a few hours. Downtown Montgomery is primarily a government/business area, so not a whole lot of shopping or restaurants to explore (especially at the end of the work week).

We toured the Civil Rights Museum and Memorial, however, which was well worth the $2 admission and we both enjoyed very much.  We also saw the Alabama State Capitol and walked by the First White House of the Confederacy (six chimneys! Jeff Davis knew how to live it up...).  Be forewarned if you're travelling to Montgomery in the next few months; the White House and Old Alabama Town are closed for extensive renovations.

In true UGA fashion, we managed to sniff out the most Athens-esque dining establishment in Montgomery, the Montgomery Brewing Company (often referred to as "The Brewpub"). The food was good, if not very exciting - I had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich and the BF had a shrimp pasta dish ("too garlicky" was the verdict). The beer was good and well-priced, and live entertainment was on tap, though we didn't stay to hear the band. Definitely a good place to eat if you find yourself in Montgomery.
