So, here we are, getting into the Aloha spirit...planning our Hawaiian Anniversary celebration...a visit to the 50th State seems to be touching more than one milestone...this will mark our 42nd State visited in the USA, taking us into the final stretch...we will also be ticking off the 15th "Highlight" of USA in the Lonely Planet Guidebook and....and we'd have seen all of USA's famous beaches with this trip....a lot to look forward to...
Been trying to figure out which of the islands to visit...there's this great site I found...its a scorecard tailored to your individual preferences -
http://gohawaii.about.com/od/hawaiivacationplanner/a/island_scores.htm and gives you a customised choice. The islands that were recommended as good fits for us - Oahu & Big Island...are both 'must dos' as its hard to choose between Waikiki Beach & oozing molten lava flows...so we're just going to visit them both....
There's also this fabulous site I found with wonderful suggestions
www.govisithawaii.com and writer Sheila gives some really good tips and answers your queries ASAP..its really great so go check it out before you visit!
by any stretch.
I lick it.
The Big Island is so versatile, you can be snow skiing Mauna Kea in the morning and be on the beach surfing in the afternoon.
The locals are always available to direct you and you avoid wasting time by speaking to locals about sites to visit and restaurants etc.
You can drive around the entire island in one day...but it is a hard day and one must leave early to enjoy it.
If you visit Volcano National Park...wear sun block, hiking boots, cool layored clothing, with one protective jacket, water, flashlight, and go early. Cell phones do not work out there...obey all rules posted by the Ranger station and be aware..it can be dangerous even for the young, fit, experienced hiker. Take heed and enjoy.
