Newport Beach

Day 2: Newport Beach

Up an’ at ‘em!  It’s time to pack up, checkout and leave Huntington Beach .  Onwards to Newport Beach, the next stop on your tour of Orange County .  More then just a beach, Newport Beach has a lot to offer, from inventive local cuisine to the legendary Newport Harbor .  Get excited because you’re going to want to do it all!  Just a short drive from Huntington Beach , you’ll arrive at your hotel in no time.  Check in and get situated, then it’s off to explore!

For beautiful views and breathtaking greens, grab your camera and take a ride up to the Pelican Hill Golf Club.  The club’s golf course overlooks the Pacific Ocean providing gorgeous coastal backdrops for all of your photo ops.

For the kid in you, Balboa Island is an absolute must.  Catch the ferry and head over for just a few hours, or the rest of the day.  With plenty of ice cream shops (featuring Balboa Island ’s famous frozen chocolate bananas), a famous Ferris wheel and loads of other attractions, it will be hard to leave.  Looking to nurture your creative side?  Check out this unique opportunity.  Whale watching is always a big hit in sunny Orange County .

After a day of exploring, treat yourself to a luxurious dinner at The First Cabin Restaurant.  Catch the ferry back to Newport Beach and call it a day.  There’s lots of exploring left to do!

Wishing for a clean sandy beach where it is warm & affordable not horribly far from Sacramento, CA

Orange County is one of the many crown jewels of the Pacific Coast; pure and simple. If you can imagine it, it can be done here on a grand scale. Fishing, biking, golfing, skiing nearby, surfing, shopping, skate boarding, people watching, walking, or sunbathing, you name it. There is a reason why this place is expensive and either loved or loathed by many.

We enjoyed this trip last summer. Mainly stayed at the beach and found out-of-the-way shops and small restaurants in Laguna to relax in. The name of the game was low-key, not driving off to see everything possible. We took in the walks and breathtaking scenery and felt safe and sound.

I think this itinerary sounds good but it really isn't. What about all the traffic? And going from one place to another is nothing like the East Coast....... everything is far, EVERYTHING! If you are planning to come Orange County stick to the main tourist attractions. Everything else is just like anywhere else!

The "Balboa Island Fun Zone" doesn't exist. When the fun zone was in existence it was on the Balboa Penninulsla. Did you morons even take this trip?

esite4835's description is full of inaccuracies...some of which are noted above by other folks. i'm going to elaborate on just the airport falsehoods. orange county is serviced locally by the john wayne airport only. other airports in the southern california area such as lax and ontario involve many, many miles of driving in the world famous southern california traffic. you'll want to avoid that at all costs unless you're a masochist. the only real option to the john wayne airport, is the airport in long beach. the long beach airport is small, generally quiet and not far from orange county. you'll still catch some traffic during peak hours but it is far less than the drive from either lax or ontario. and in most cases, long beach is cheaper to fly into than the john wayne airport which is in the heart of orange county. be sure to preview your itinerary options using both john wayne and long beach airports to see which offers the best cost/time solution for your trip.

We don't call it Big Sur Coast Highway...it's PCH, as in Pacific Coast Highway

ONE MORE TIP ...
If you are in Laguna Beach when the Pageant of the Masters is showing, it is a MUST SEE. They take live models and adorn them as the subjects in famous paintings, from Washington Crossing the Deleware to Venus, the goddess statue. They re-create the artwork in full life size, it is fabulous! This is an evening show that takes place during the summer months. It is held on the grounds of the Laguna Beach Art Festival, which is in walking distance (a few blocks up Laguna Canyon Road from where it intersects Pacific Coast Highway) from any of the hotels in the main section of Laguna.
