Arrival and Huntington Beach

Arrival:

So, you’ve just arrived in sunny Southern California , now what?  Most of you will have landed in Los Angeles (although Orange County is most easily accessible by the John Wayne Airport) which is just 40 miles north of Orange County.  Grab your rental car and map and head South to your luxurious accommodations booked through the OCeanfront.  If you’re not in a rush (and can stand the famed LA traffic!), you might consider stopping for a few photo ops along the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre by taking a quick detour through Hollywood .  Keep your eye out for the rich and famous!

Depending on when you arrive, a detour through LA may be too hectic and rushed.  If that’s the case, then start making your way to Huntington Beach , the first stop on your tour of Orange County .  For those of you with a flare for dramatic scenery and breathtaking views, drive South along Route 1, commonly referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway.  There’s probably not time to stop and explore today, but it will provide for a beautiful, coastal ride South.

Once you’ve arrived and checked into your Huntington Beach hotel, change into your bathing suit and take a quick, refreshing dip in the resort’s luxurious pool or take advantage of the resort’s direct access to the beach.  Pool or beach, be sure to bring your copy of the Oceanfront Magazine to learn more about the area.

Hungry yet?  Check out the Chef of the Month and book your reservations at the featured restaurant!

Day 1: Huntington Beach

Welcome to Surf City!  After a long day of traveling yesterday, take today to get a feel for Orange County pampering and relaxation.  Start the morning off slow with a deliciously prepared meal at Pete’s Sunset, or travel down the road to Shades, a California bistro at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort.  Once you fill up on breakfast, its time to enjoy the eight miles of scenic and accessible beachfront that Huntington Beach is known for.  If you’re looking to catch some waves, you might want to check beach conditions before you head out.  There’s always something fun going on at the beach so pack a lunch and stay the whole day!  With temperatures comparable to the Mediterranean , you’ll want to bask in the sun for sure.  Be sure to check out Huntington Beach Events for more activities and fun things to do.

Once you’ve gotten your fair share of sun, head back to your room for a quick shower and change.  Huntington Beach is famous for its shopping, however, if shopping isn’t for you, then check out the famous Pier, one of the most visited landmarks in Huntington Beach , or some of the many museums Huntington Beach has to offer.

After a day of sun and fun, it’s time for a cocktail!  Check out one of the numerous bars and restaurants along the beach, many of which offer live music and a lively location great for people watching.  Head back to The Californian for a scrumptious meal and a relaxing end to the day.  Be sure to get a good night’s rest: it’s on to Newport Beach tomorrow!

Orange County, I remember when the only place to go to was the Ritz Carlton. Everything else was just dirt. I mean the place is called orange county for a reason. Truly a shame that the whole area has become a series of track homes. Stay close to the beach, otherwise you might just get lost in endless neighborhoods. Also, don't take the 405 or the 5 freeway. If you need to get to Orange County, walk, its probably faster.

Big Sur Highway????? WTF, We locals call it PCH.

BE ADVISED ...
Route 1 in Southern California is called the Pacific Coast Highway, not the Big Sur Coast Highway. Big Sur is on the Central Coast, several hours north of Huntington Beach and the other distinations on this itenerary.

BE ADVISED, AGAIN ...
They suggest a visit to South Coast Plaza with your shopoholics, but they suggest it from Huntington Beach. South Coast Plaza is nearer to the hotel in Newport Beach than Huntington Beach.

SUGGESTION
Hit any of the pier resteraunts at sunset for dinner. There is no experience anywhere that is better than sitting on the pier at sunset having any faire from burgers & and beer to surf & turf with fine wine. Your state of undress will limit some of the options -- the places serving burgers and beer will likely not object to bikinis and board shorts.

ONE MORE TIP ...
If you are in Laguna Beach when the Pageant of the Masters is showing, it is a MUST SEE. They take live models and adorn them as the subjects in famous paintings, from Washington Crossing the Deleware to Venus, the goddess statue. They re-create the artwork in full life size, it is fabulous! This is an evening show that takes place during the summer months. It is held on the grounds of the Laguna Beach Art Festival, which is in walking distance (a few blocks up Laguna Canyon Road from where it intersects Pacific Coast Highway) from any of the hotels in the main section of Laguna.

We don't call it Big Sur Coast Highway...it's PCH, as in Pacific Coast Highway

esite4835's description is full of inaccuracies...some of which are noted above by other folks. i'm going to elaborate on just the airport falsehoods. orange county is serviced locally by the john wayne airport only. other airports in the southern california area such as lax and ontario involve many, many miles of driving in the world famous southern california traffic. you'll want to avoid that at all costs unless you're a masochist. the only real option to the john wayne airport, is the airport in long beach. the long beach airport is small, generally quiet and not far from orange county. you'll still catch some traffic during peak hours but it is far less than the drive from either lax or ontario. and in most cases, long beach is cheaper to fly into than the john wayne airport which is in the heart of orange county. be sure to preview your itinerary options using both john wayne and long beach airports to see which offers the best cost/time solution for your trip.

The "Balboa Island Fun Zone" doesn't exist. When the fun zone was in existence it was on the Balboa Penninulsla. Did you morons even take this trip?

I think this itinerary sounds good but it really isn't. What about all the traffic? And going from one place to another is nothing like the East Coast....... everything is far, EVERYTHING! If you are planning to come Orange County stick to the main tourist attractions. Everything else is just like anywhere else!
