Planning Ahead- Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon has been owned and operated by a private non-profit organization, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, since 1858. Mount Vernon accepts no government support and is maintained entirely by fees from admission tickets, retail and food sales, and donations from patriotic Americans.

Mount Vernon accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express at the Main Gate, Shops, the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant and the Food Court.

Admission Tickets to Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens

Adults - $13.00
Senior Citizens, age 62 and above (with identification) - $12.00 
Youth ages 6 through 11 (accompanied by an adult) - $6.00
Children ages 5 and under (accompanied by an adult) – FREE
Annual Pass (unlimited daytime admission for one year) - $18.00
Add a Youth to Annual Pass, each - $9.00

Open April - October

When purchased with Estate admission:
Adults - $2.00 in addition to the Estate's admission

Sightseeing Cruises on the Potomac River

See Mount Vernon from a new view! Relax and enjoy a 40-minute narrated excursion along the Potomac River. Available Tuesday through Sunday at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 2:00 and 3:00, May through August and weekends in April and September.

Adults and Seniors tickets - $9.00
Youth tickets ages 6 through 11 - $5.00
Children tickets ages 5 and under - FREE

Official Guidebook

This 160-page book includes more than 170 full-color photographs. It will enliven and expand the experience of visiting Washington's home and will serve as a perfect remembrance of your tour. $5.00 includes tax.

Hours of Operation

Mount Vernon is open seven days a week, every day of the year, including holidays and Christmas.

Mount Vernon welcomes visitors on the following schedule:

  • April through August, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    (effective Saturday, March 31, 2007)
  • March, September, and October, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • November through February, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Historic Area of Mount Vernon is cleared one-half hour after closing. The Donald W. Reynolds Museum & Education Center is cleared one hour after closing.

The Shops at Mount Vernon

Open daily March through October 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., November through February 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The Lady Washington Shop, located in the historic area near the greenhouse: March through October, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; November through February, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Gristmill Shop, located at George Washington's Gristmill, three miles west of the estate: April through October 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m; closed November through March

The charming Mount Vernon Inn offers lunch daily and elegant dinners by candlelight Monday through Saturday, with six intimate dining rooms, three fireplaces, colonial-costumed servers, and delicious regional and colonial cuisine. For dinner reservations call (703)780-0011.

Lunch is served daily (except Christmas), 11:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Dinner is served Monday through Saturday, 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
(hours of operation are subject to change)

Mount Vernon Food Court

Choose from a fresh selection of pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads, ice cream and more. Food Court vouchers, box lunches, and breakfast are available for groups by calling (703) 799-8688.

The Food Court is open daily, 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. with some variation in selection and hours by season.

Hey sounds like a great trip! I live 4 miles from Arlington, VA. Williamsburg is great too. Best time to see DC is in the springtime, see the Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin, etc. Hope you enjoy the trip!
