We flew in from LAX on Aug 14 (thurs) and arrived in Honolulu at around 9PM. Retrieved our luggage from baggage claim and was soon on our way to our hotel for the night before jumping on another plane to Kauai the next day (friday). We stayed at the Aqua Island Colony which is centrally located and close to Waikiki strip and beach. We got a pretty decent deal of $ 77/night which I booked through hotels.com. The room was okay - just good enough for a night's stay. I wouldn't recommend it though if you are staying more than a day or two. (The photos on the left is our view from our hotel room.) The hotel was also in the midst of renovations which we were not aware of - so the sliding door in our balcony was locked and we couldn't even step out to enjoy the view.
We finally got settled in our room at past 10PM. We took a shuttle (Roberts Hawaii) which took almost half an hour to show up and had to make several stops for the other passengers before we got dropped off at our hotel. The fare was only $45 (roundtrip) total for all three of us (2 adults and 1 child age almost 5). It was the best way to go for we were only in Honolulu for the night and all I had to do was make a reservation ahead of time for the return back to the airport and they will pick you up from your hotel. It's better than renting a car and dealing with traffic going into Honolulu or taking a taxi that would cost you about $90 round trip.
