City
What a trip! I'm writing this on the flight back from Europe and am going to recap our two weeks for friends, family, and anyone on Yahoo that might be reading this for inspiration like I did with other trips.
Our objective was to see the blockbuster cities and monuments- to hit as many high points as we could in two weeks.

We went by train but I sort of regret it. Any train ride over 3 hours look into flights. They are cheap over there. The nice thing about train stations is that they drop you off right in the middle of town and of course no security and other hassles with flying. Plus they are quite fun and you get to see the countryside as you travel.
But we took an overnight train from Paris to Venice which was a time waster.
The Sainte-Chappelle was built by King John who later became St. John. His mother was the sister of the king of Spain which is why you see all the castles(taken from spanish family crest) painted around the lower floor. The chapel was built to house the Crown of Thorns that King John brought back from the crusades. The glow from the stain glass windows is such a vibrant golden color that it give the impression of being in heaven. Maybe it was the time of day that you saw it. Sorry you did not like it. Knowing some background history always enriches the experience.
in reply to V who is going to Europe in Sept. If going to travel to Europe, it is best to make a reservation for the first 2 nights of visit so that you can get over jet lag and have time to find a hotel without dragging luggage or backpack around. I have had great success by going on the computer and checking out websites to make reservations in other cities while traveling. This also lets you find a location after you get there if you talk to another visitor who recommends an area of town that is good. Good luck and have a great trip.
