Day 1
Well, for a long time I have been dreaming about going West and on January 1st I finally decided to do something about it. It was probably not a very wise thing to go out West with
A) its terrible weather
B)it being in the middle of Winter and
C) having a car with no snow tires and in serious need of repairs
but after some thinking I just decided the heck with it. Anyways, what is the worst that could happen to me, right?!
I just had one more obstacle I had to overcome before I could get West. My car's inspection sticker ran out on January 1st so I had to avoid being noticed or else this would be a very short journey!
I left real early in the morning to avoid detection and the snow began to fall so I thought I was safe but just before I left the state of New York I was pulled over. The trooper was nice though and just gave me a warning. So I was on my way again.
My goal on day 1 was to end up in Columbus, OH, a city that comes with some historical significance to my family.
However, the snow really began to pour down far in excess of the weather forecast. In fact, in the month and a half out west in some of the most inhospitable cities for weather in the country this was probably the worst snow storm I ever encountered.
It really started to get bad around Erie, PA and before I got to Cleveland, the highway was down to one lane. The traffic was moving at 10-15 M.P.H., my windshield wipers were starting to go out, I was completely out of food, and I wasn't quite sure how much longer my headlights, which were on all day, were going to last.
I truly couldn't see ahead of me and because there were shoulders to pull off on there was also no way to stop!
This was a very precarious situation and I thought for sure that it was going to end very badly for me but somehow I got through Cleveland and after Cleveland the snow lightened up, though I still couldn't see well because it was getting dark.
After many long hours of fighting through the snow and damaging my eyesight after having to squint so long and so hard to see the road I finally made it to Columbus, OH.
Amazing!
