The Essex Steam Train is an excellent tourist attraction; it combines unique access to natural scenery in a relaxed setting as it tours north from Essex to Deep River, CT. The railyard itself is curious, though the station is located a distance from anything else that might be of interest, especially the town and harbor of Essex, CT.
The Selden Neck State Park in Hadlyme is a beautiful resource on the eastern bank of the estuarial Connecticut River. There is excellent access to the park for boaters from the Hadlyme ferry parking lot. The kayaking in the creek that creates the island is outstanding.
The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry is a throwback into time, and has one of the more dramatic settings on the lower Connecticut River. The lands on either side of the river are especially pretty. The eastern shore is very private by comparison, and has virtually no commerce.
