Helen- November 2008
We live only 45 mins from Helen so have been countless times but wanted a overnight trip to spend time with my SIL and her fiance before they moved to the Netherlands. Our favorite part of the trip was The Willows pottery studio on Saturday. It is a cozy place but so much fun. They were having a birthday party inside but we got to sit on the porch out front and paint our pottery. I was able to pick the pieces up the next week. (They will also ship them to you.) Walked next door to the Nacoochee Grill. Let me just say, this is THE BEST restaurant in Helen as far as I'm concerned. The prices might be a smidgen higher but definitely worth it. No, it's not German food. There is plenty of that elsewhere. However, we dined at Cafe International the night before and it was pretty good. You can sit outside on the covered deck next to the river. Jolly's Toys and Charlemagne's Kingdom are musts if you have kids in tow. As is Hansel and Gretel's Candy Kitchen. They have the best chocolate caramel apples I've ever had! I can't pass through Helen without stopping for one. Be sure to go to the one in the middle of town though. (There are two.) It is the best one. Anna Ruby Falls is a good short hike but was pretty crowded that day. I always love to go into Betty's Country Store. For a country store it is enormous. They have fresh meat, produce and many things you can't find in your local grocery store. The Best Western was a great choice for a hotel. The breakfast was very simple but good, it is within walking distance of the shops in town, the staff was very courteous and it seemed to be very clean. Anyway, that's it in a nutshell!
