We chose this hotel for a pre-cruise stay out of Bayonne, based upon the reviews and it's proximity to public transportation to NYC. Also, traveling w our two sons, 18 & 21, we needed two rooms and inexpensive food, the Secausus Embassy Suites not only provided everything we hoped for, but they went above and beyond in terms of Customer Service.
Our son checked in first without any problem in the early afternoon and had a roll away waiting for his brother when we arrived much later.
The indoor atrium was beautiful and decorated for the holidays. Plenty of tables and chairs and a small lounge area which hosts a "managers reception" in the evening with inexpensive drinks and complementary muchies....veggies, cheese and chips. Basic but comfortable surroundings, plentiful noshes and overall a nice place to hang out.
The fitness center is small with a few newer machines (treadmill, elliptical, stairstepper I believe). It is open 24 hrs a day. I didnt use the indoor pool, but my sons did and they enjoyed it thoroughly.
The business center had 2 computers with a printer, plenty of paper and a free internet connection. Wifi in the hotel rooms and atrium was $9.95 a day. I had no problems with the signal.
Breakfast was cooked to order, with a variety of things to add to your custom omlete including mushrooms, cheese, onions, and bacon. Or you could have your eggs cooked to order. There was a bread/pastry station where you could toast your own bagels or bread, and another station for making (and topping) thick, hot waffles. The "buffett" offered various fruits, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and a variety of cereals. The beverage bar had juices coffee and teas.
Staff members worked feverishly to clean up after people and would take the time to bring refresh my coffee or bring me juice or water, as well as chat. They were really the nicest people!
Our "suite" on the third floor had two rooms, a bedroom w/a TV and dresser in it, a bathroom w/Bath & Body Works soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion (nice touch!) and plenty of towels! The wet bar had a wobbly faucet that made it difficult to use, but there was a working microwave, empty refridgerator (decent size too!) and a safe large enough to hold my laptop computer.
Linens and mattresses were ok, the rooms completely darkened with black out curtains. However, noise from the atrium level was audible in the front room as the breakfast crowd grew. Although the room may have felt a little worn, the hotel itself was beautifully maintained.
A little gift shop carries assorted sundries including stamps and sweat shirts and snacks. Vending machines have sodas and snacks.
A shopping center is located right across the street with a pizza place, a sushi restaurant, Chili's, Outback Steakhouse, Cheeseburger in Paradise & a few other restaurants as well as a multi-screen movie theater.
Access to NYC couldnt have been easier...well except for the traffic. The bus was very easy to catch and only a 15 minute ride into the city....unless there is an accident. Avoid it during rush hour....it took us 1.5 hrs to travel the same distance in the evening that took 15 mins in the early afternoon!
As I mentioned earlier, the customer service at this hotel is consistently outstanding. Literally EVERY person we met on this staff went out of their way to make sure everything was taken care of. From checking in...to checking out, correcting an error on our bill (cheerfully!), refilling a coffee cup, delivering a sofa bed or providing a driver for us... I can't say enough about the staff.
We needed a ride to the port, and they provided us with a driver for a very reasonable rate (I think it was $50 for 4 of us w/LOTS of luggage) We used him on the way back from the port too, same rate to EWR.
The ultimate in assistance occured however on Christmas Eve, we were at sea when I realized I had left all of my jewelry in the hotel safe...and had left the safe OPEN!!! My husband contacted the hotel, and on Christmas that called and told us they had recovered my jewelry, when we arrived home it was waiting for us. Everyone can say, well yes, that was the right thing to do, that was part of their job, but heck....it just doesnt happen that consistently anymore. All of the staff members at the Embassy Suites- Secaucus made this stay extremely pleasent.
Even if the beds aren't triple sheeted...the quality of the breakfast & reception, the upkeep of the facilities, the location and proximity to restaurants and NYC and attention to detail by every employee are all reasons why I rate this hotel as EXCELLENT and would not only stay here again, but recommend it to both family and friends.
