Washington, DC and Army Ten-Miler

My husband entered the Army 10 Miler and we decided to make a family vacation out of it.  This was my first time to DC.  My husband has been twice before but had a limited amount of time for sightseeing since he was there primarily for training.  We also brought our one-year-old son, which added some scheduling considerations.

The Jurys Normandy Inn is on a quiet street in the Embassy district north of DuPont Circle .  It’s about one mile downhill to the DuPont Circle metro stop, and is one mile uphill to the National Zoo.  There are several restaurants, in a wide range of prices, near the Circle.

After checking in, we walked down to the metro, took the red line to Metro Center , and walked to the Mall.  A competition to build a house completely dependent on solar power is underway on the Mall, so most of the lawn is covered with construction equipment.  We started with the Air & Space Museum .  This isn’t really my thing, but it was interesting.  There is a section devoted to the Wright Brothers.  I couldn’t help taking a picture of the portrait of Wilbur Wright.  I’m a Harry Potter fan, and was struck by his resemblance to Jason Isaacs, who portrays Lucius Malfoy.

The American History Museum is closed for renovations (sob), but they have a small exhibit at the Air & Space Museum .  I should say very small.  It’s only two rooms.  It’s scheduled to reopen summer 2008, so maybe we can make it back in a couple of years.

On our way back to the metro, we had to stop for a motorcade on Pennsylvania Avenue .  We like to pretend it was the President, but who knows.

For dinner we ate a Johnny Rockets, which is a 50s style burger joint.  The food was good, but the service left a lot to be desired.
