
Saturday (Day 1)
Arrived later than expected into Honolulu Airport- it was raining out and generally dreary. Our first impressions of Hawaii at 9:00 pm at night were not very good. As we were driving through the rain on Nimitz Hwy towards our hotel in Waikiki, we first noticed several blocks of buildings covered in graffitti and then at Ala Moana Park, an inordinate number of homeless people, including one lady who was laying out a dirty old mattress along the sidewalk for her night's rest. As I was saying, this wasn't exactly the picturesque first impression of Hawaii that we were expecting.
It was to become a recurring theme for the entire trip- Incredible natural beauty marred by a poorly maintained park system and an incredibly high number of homeless locals living on the beaches and in parks.
Anyhow, we made it to our hotel easily enough and called it a night after getting unpacked.
Sunday (Day 2)
Today we hung around our hotel for the morning and checked out the great resort complex that Hale Koa has- 70 something acres of green space, hotel buildings and three restaurants (Bibas, Koko's and the baref
Thought about hitting some of the beaches in that area. however, several yahoo users have stated there is a large homeless population and lots of theft.
On the other hand, the travel book we've picked up says to not believe the over-exagerations of the thefts and crime in this area. Common sense generally tells me not to leave valuables in a car anyhow, so I'm agreeing with the book...
