Our Journey Begins!

Packing and Boston Logan Airport

Today is the day my mom and I are leaving for Scotland for a nineteen day vacation! I took today off of work and I spent it running around like mad!  I dislocated my elbow on August 1st in an ATV accident so this will be an interesting trip.  I am just out of the Bledsoe brace that I had to wear 24/7 and now my arm is weak and sore and I have to be careful not to lift anything heavy.  Since I usually carry and lift both my luggage and my mom’s this will be a challenge.  I also have a Dynasplint to wear at night to try to stretch my elbow so I can regain full extension.  Elbows are notoriously stiff and it was pretty much bent at 90 degrees at first and didn’t move much.

We made it to Boston's Logan Airport in good time and checked four bags between us and they didn’t even charge us for mom’s overweight bags.  Good deal!  From the Aer Lingus counter we made our way to the security line, which was really long!  The TSA agent made us step out of line to stuff our purses into our backpacks so we would only have 2 carry on bags each.  We told her we would put them in the backpack after we cleared security, but she didn’t care.

Just as I was about to put my bags through scanner at security – a TSA agent escorting four women (one was in a wheelchair) barged in front of me and had all four women go in front of me.  I can understand that the lady in the wheelchair needed assistance, but the others should have had to wait their turn like everyone else.  Especially since they all set off the alarms and took forever.

Then of course my carry on with all my camera gear was chosen to for trace detection, so I had to step aside again and stand in a little box and watch while they swabbed my bag.  The TSA was also concerned about my elbow brace which was in mom’s carry on.  Luckily we had stuck the brace in her bag or the other TSA agent probably would have hassled us about that as an additional item also.  The agent who opened mom’s bag was cool about it – he told her I was probably just trying to get out of carrying heavy stuff on the trip!   :o)

When we were finally through security, we were still so early that we had hours to wait till boarding time.  Boring!  We decided to get something to eat at the restaurant at the end of the concourse, which coincidentally is the same restaurant that Steve, Alice and I ate at last year when we were heading to Greece .

We had a little trouble getting the camera gear bag in the overhead compartment because of my stupid elbow, but a nice lady ‘volunteered’ her tall husband to put it up there for us.  We had an aisle and a window seat together as the plane was a 2 4 2 seating configuration.  The flight was uneventful until minutes after they served our meal.  Then turbulence struck and kept up for at least an hour.  Bad turbulence – like being in a blender!  I decided to close my eyes and try to sleep. When I woke up the plane was dark, and of course mom was still up reading.  She can’t sleep on planes at all!!!

Talk about this trip (10)

Still in the early planning stages of this trip! It will be my mom and I for 18-21 days. We're flying in and out of Glasgow (renting a car) and also want to visit Edinburgh and the Highlands. We're interested in castles, historical sites, scenic drives and villages and gardens. Hoping to get some suggestions regarding must see places, lodging? (hotels preferred) and restaurants. Hopefully this isn't too general a request. Thanks!!

Another question! What are the must see castles/historic properties/sites in Scotland?

I have a huge list (as you can see in my itinerary) of potential places to go see and will probably have to whittle it down some. :-(

Depending on your style (I like ruins castles and Abbeys), take a look at historic scotland (Sure you already know this site). I've started all my planning with this site!

Also, undiscovered Scotland is an other really nice web site! Il helped me to complete missing places.

Quick question, how do you manage to see so much things in one day? For example, day 17, I've been told that the Edinburgh castle it worth an whole day over there.

When I plan a trip, I try to include all the places/things that look interesting. Then I research in depth each place and try to whittle the list down to the absolute must see/do. I also like to have some backup choices in case for some reason my first choice isn't open or the weather is too awful.

I probably tend to try to do too much anyway! But there will be days when plans change for one reason or another. The things that I can't get to will have to wait until the next trip!!

Very good point! I will prob. do the same!

Try Glamis Castle, you can get into it and it is worth the visit just to see the long drive down to the castle, this is the family seat of the Queen Mother, another castle not to miss would be Fyvie castle, plenty of ghost stories related to this one and the gardens are worth a look too. on Skye go to Dunvegan Castle, gardens again are worth the look, will not take too long to go round,as with most castles and Gardens you can get into the gardens only if you don't want to pay to get in for a look round, also note that alot of the castles will be closed in the fall, so watch when you go and check the opening times. Museum of Island life is good too tells you all about Flora Macdonald, and Bonnie Prince Charlie . All I would say is that the distances are long, and although you may think that you could do Skye in a day for example, you may not be able to as with the magnificent scenery along the way it will take time stopping for photos, lunch etc, because believe me the scenery is worth the look if nothing else, but then again I'm biased as I am Scottish!, also alot of the castles on your list are ruins or partial ruins, eg, Eilean Donan Castle, (but you can get into the great hall, which they are restoring), for journey time when I go to Skye, from Glasgow, it takes me 5 and a half hours, stopping once for a break, if I am going from Glasgow to Aberdeen, it is about 3 hours, alot of the roads are not straight, and can have alot of twists, and are single track in places especially on Skye, so just be careful, if you need any more info please ask,

Gillian

Hi Gillian - Thanks for all the excellent info! Glamis is on my list for sure. I hope to decide over the next few months on which places I feel I absolutely must see and which I would like to see but could be skipped if time was short.

It's really hard as there are so many gorgeous regions and sites to see in Scotland!!

If you make it to Culloden battlefield, you should really stop at the neolithic burial site of Clava Cairns which is located only about a mile and a half from the battle field. It's a beautiful, quiet spot with fascinating stone-aged burial mounds and standing stones.

From Oban, you might enjoy exploring Kilmartin Glen, about an hour's drive south of Oban. Kilmartin is one of the greatest places on the mainland to view ancient stone-age burial mounds and stone circles...and Dunadd, which was the site of a great fortress and the crowning place of ancient kings long before Scotland even existed as a nation. Kenneth MacAlpin, first king of a united Scotland, was crowned here before moving the capital to Scone. Saint Columba is also said to have visited here.

Good Luck, you're going to Love it all.

I'm looking for advice on where to stay after touring Kelburn Castle in Fairlie. We will be heading to Oban the next day and are looking to stay somewhere between Fairlie and Oban. I was thinking of staying in Greenock, but wonder if there is a better (more convient to our route or more scenic) place to stay the night. Thanks in advance!!
