Sat 05/22/04 (day 1)

Part One - Denver, Colorado & the Rockies

This was really two trips in one: First to visit our daughter, who had moved to Denver, and see the Rockies and some sites in the area. Second to take a six day trip, with her, to see Wyoming and visit three places I always wanted to see: Jackson Hole, Yellowstone and Cheyenne. Since we wanted to visit our daughter, it gave us the perfect excuse to do both in one trip to two places we had never been.

So we flew to Denver and met our daughter at the airport. We were amazed that when we landed there was no sight of Denver anywhere to be found. We knew the airport was not near the city, but this was ridiculous! She took us to the rental car facility near the airport and then we followed her to our hotel and checked in. Then she showed us around the area, where she lived and worked, and then we went to Lookout Mountain and saw the Coors Brewery off in the distance in Golden--just like you hear in those beer commercials.

I have been to Co. many many time because i have relatives who live there. I never get tired of going there and seeing the same sights.(pikes peak, royal gorge ect... there many !!!) but one of my favorite things to do
is to just pick an old road and see where it leads. going though so many old mining towns and so much history. I really like victor and cripple creek old mining towns that during the gold rush years was the largest cities until there was a hugh fire and just about burned on both cities. Unfortunately they have turned most of the old hotels in to casinos... but they did keep the building fronts untouched so you still have a real since of the history behind the city. Have fun and don't be afraid to explore new areas and also
take a river rafting trip under royal gorge very very exciting and fun!!!!!

Thanks for sharing your trip on the web. We are planning a trip to Colorado and then to Wyoming next month, so this really helps us with our planning. Did you make hotel reservations in advance, and if so, how far in advance? Thanks again for sharing.

plan on going to co and wy in aug 2011 plan on going to pikes peak,royal gorge rocky mts natioal park jackson hole yellowstone and got place to see that is worth while and place to stay and eat let me know but i am on a buget so let me know i hear garden of the god is worth the time and seven falls is worth it so take care everyone Jerry

Hi Hannah. Actually, we did--in Cheyenne on the way back to Denver. On our first trip we were there on Memorial Day and there were no rodeos and we were really disappointed. But on this trip we stayed one night on a buffalo ranch in Cheyenne and that evening there was a college rodeo at the local Community College and it was fantastic! They had every rodeo event and the college kids were awesome. Hope you get to see one.

This was really informative! It's kinda of funny because I get on and happened to see this and me and a few girlfriends are planning on driving from IL to Windsor, Colorado where my sister is and from there to Cody, Wyoming and to visit Yellowstone so this was helpful! Did you happen to see any rodeos when you were in Wyoming?

If you're looking for a better detour than Cheyenne, try Laramie, WY. There is an old fort museum and the university for attractions. Then you can take hwy 287 through Ft. Collins, CO back to I-25 into Denver.

Thank you so much for such a wealth of information, you have given me great ideas for a similar trip from Denver to Oregon... trying to decide if a 3 hour detour to Jackson Hole would be worth it, or stick to the suggested route and head near Salt Lake City... I have always heard about Jackson and wanted to go there so we shall see!! Thanks again, great trip story!
