When in Italy, STAY AWAY FROM TOURIST TRAPS such as street vendors at the Ponte Vecchio and in other areas. They like to harrass tourists, and I have seen them reprimanded by police officers before. It can be scary.
If you're hungry and on a budget, stop by any number of the pizza vendors around town. Italian pizza is fairly cheap and DELICIOUS! Unlike American pizza, it is usually toppings such as pepperoni, tomato, and slices of mozarella cheese served between two pieces of flatbread. The perfect Italian lunch!
I recommend a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable clothing. I toured Italy with a group, and we were told not to wear jeans, and to bring dress clothes for the papal audience. These instructions made parts of the trip miserable, as we walked most everywhere. You do not need to do this. Italians wear jeans all the time, and jeans will not point you out as an American. Also, most people at the papal audience are dressed very casually.
