Day 1 – Journey starts

WE HAVE MOVED: Find me at http://teamzumzum.blogspot.com/
The link to the pictures is on the right side of the blog :-)

After a tedious cab 1h30 ride through a congested London in company of an annoyed cab driver (well London is congested, if it annoys you, why take such a job I wonder) we reach Heathrow’s shabby T3. e-checking does not work, so we end up having to queue like everyone else. A dozen passengers later, we find out that the seats have already been reserved and we are not seated together (we are actually on opposite sides of the plane, but that the good news is one of us has a window seat. After asking several times, the lady says there’s nothing she can do and we sill have to swap seats in the plane. OK so this keeps on getting worse it seems. So according to Virgin’s website, there are various complimentary magazines and newspapers we can pick up from the display before boarding. My excitement decreased quite quickly when I stood, puzzled infront of the display! Going to China , I am not quite sure how TimeOut Dubai, and a kind of Best of America magazines are going to be any help… Anyhow, we manage to swap seats in the plane, but the window seat is not as great as it seemed. It’s right on the middle of the wing, great! So we will not get to see anything. I get acquainted with the ‘Virgin entertainment centre’, which cheers me up immediately. There must be a choice of 2 dozen movies, a dozen TV shows, games and travel guides, interactive map, and various things that I did not even have time to look at, even though the flight was 11 hours.

I loved Shanghai and I will be moving there in just 2 weeks. There is so much to see. All the western advertising and shopping is just an amalgamation of the Western and Eastern culture. If you took the time to visit Shanghai as I did you would find many traditional and interesting places that reflect the Chinese culture, it is China. I am sorry you had an awful time, you should really give it a second chance and perhaps plan your trip better. You only spent one week in China and a couple of days in Shanghai, I couldn't imagine judging anywhere or anything with only 2 days of exposure. For those who are thinking about going, buy your plane ticket, Shanghai is quite an experience...Please purchase the Lonely Guide Shanghai book, it really helps with your trip.... :)

Shanghai really is what you make of it. There is alot of history to be found, as well as alot lost by the development it has experienced. One would be better served going to Shanghai with the expectation of finding a London or New York in Asia. I call Shanghai home for now, my wife and I have come to really appreciate the complexity and culture available here.
The marketing approaches the Vegas example however, so this journal isn't off base. If you are deeply interested in finding China, this is only one obtuse facet of it.

hahaha...try suzhou or hanzhou. you'll enjoy it more than the metropolistic shanghai.

I have lived in Shanghai for one year and it has been a love hate relationship. Overall, like anywhere, it is what you make of it. There are some very interesting historical and cultural attractions in and around Shanghai, with Hangzhou being one of the nicest Chinese cities I have ever been to. Like it, or not, in Shanghai you will find more of what China is becoming, rather than what is was, and that alone is worth the trip.

I can not agree with what you say about Shanghai. I don't think it is fair to define a place with what is in your imagination of what a place should look like. Indeed, what shanghai looks like now is what it should look like. It has looked like this way for hundreds of years. It is a place where triditional Chinese culture and things from the rest of the world mingled together and formed its own unique culture and phenomenon. I have traveled many places in the world and I always try to enjoy what the different places can offer. Seeing different things is indeed the essence of traveling, isn't it?
