We drove 5 minutes from our hotel to the Willow Grove metro station and took the Metro into DC. It only took about 30 minutes and one train change to get to the National Mall area. Since it was a nice clear day, I decided we’d spend our day touring the monuments, and not the museum. First, we bought a ticket on the Tour Mobile. This is one of the sightseeing shuttles which allows you to hop on and off and various stops all day. The drivers were all pretty friendly and knowledgeable and the buses fairly reliable. We hopped off at the Capitol, tried to get tickets for the tour, but they’d already been distributed. So we walked around, took some pictures and then got back on the bus. We took the bus to the sculpture garden/ice skating rink and had lunch in the café there. Snapped a photo of the National Archives building (as seen in National Treasure) and perused the sculptures. Then we hopped back on the bus and went to the Jefferson Memorial. From there we walked around the tidal basin to the FDR memorial and then continued on to the WWII memorial. Then we took the bus past the White House and then back around to the Lincoln Memorial. We walked to the Vietnam War Memorial from there and then, exhausted, we took the bus back to the metro station.
Back at our hotel, we had dinner at Joe’s Crab shack and then went for a dip in the indoor pool (which had a lifeguard on duty…don’t see that at hotel pools too often.)
