Intro to team VT vacation- European Adventure

Hi All,

I plan on making entries into the journal from the travel journals that we wrote on our trip.  This hopefully will keep the entries fresh and spontaneous (although technically late entries hehehe).  I am pairing photos with the journal entries, but unfortunately they have to be small or they are really bad quality.  To see the photos larger (and good quality), click on the view all button in the trip photo album above.

Day 1 is the easy entry.  Travel day.  The only comments I can muster about travel day are.....the flight is too long, the seats are too small, team VT gets real tired (code word for crabby)........but we do it anyway for the adventure of a lifetime.

The flight took us around 14 to 16 hours with our layover in Philly.  It was a very long day.  The first flight was okay seat and leg room wise.  The flight between Philly and Madrid made P look like he was in a sardine can.   We watched around 4 movies so the flight went by pretty quickly.

Customs at the airport didn't take too long either even though about 150 people got in the same time as us.

Talk about this trip (10)
I've been reading European travel blogs and this is my favorite. We also did a European tour last December. I'm glad you liked Verona. That's my favorite Italian city too ^^

It was expensive. We always stayed in reasonably priced, modest hotels in the area of the things that we wanted to see. We didn't stay in hostels because to get a private room from hostelworld.com it was often times as expensive as the little locally owned hotels in the same area (around 150 US dollars). Many times the hostels were kind of far out of the old city center too (we almost always walked from the train station to the hotel which saved a lot of cab fair money). Most of the hotels offer free breakfast so it saved a little. I think you can say on average in Spain for 100 US dollars or less per night (sometimes you would get a kitchen included in that price and right on the beach in Nerja). Italy ranged from 100-160 US dollars per night depending on the city. Germany and all of the countries in the north were pricey in general. Almost everything that we stayed at was $150 US dollars per night. The Rick Steve's picks that we actually stayed at were the best priced so I would highly recommend checking out his picks. The dollar does not trade as well with the euro as it did last year so these prices will be a little low. If you go to ma and pa restaurants to eat, you can get great meals for reasonable prices. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Hi there! My husband and I are planning a European adventure this summer - we did London last year and loved it but this year are planning on backpacking - I am just curious how much your adventure ended up costing you...we have been saving for awhile now but I literally have no idea how much it will cost us!

Thanks for a terrific journal. It's like a friend chatting over coffee. Day6 in Seville is poetic. I don't know if you'll read this or how to contact otherwise.
I like the train travel ideas. cheers.
