Catching a late flight on Thursday, we landed at
Cortez Municipal Airport. It always feels a little weird flying over the desert at night. Without city lights below everything just looks like a big empty space. It's sort of eerie

.
From the airport we rented a car and made the short drive into the city of
Cortez, Colorado. Cortez is a pretty small place, but in the perfect location. Not only does it have an airport close by, Cortez is surrounded by a number of national parks, reservations, and beautiful scenery.
On arriving in town, we swung by a drive-thru for a quick bite and pulled in to the
Tomahawk Lodge. Going by the price and
reviews I found, the T-Hawk seemed like the best place to make our desert HQ. While it was nothing fancy, our room was clean, the staff were nice and they had free coffee and snacks in the morning. Score.
