New Journal Entry
We arrived early to the Hawthorne Hotel. We found a parking spot in the adjacent lot, no problem circling the city or walking long distances. If the lot is full, you will have to walk but no terribly far.
The woman at the front desk had our reservation available, and noted that he traveled from the Netherlands! We had booked the smallest room through the internet. She "upgraded" our accommodations to the Derby Room because he traveled so far! WOW! AMAZING! We were so impressed by that!
The room was very large with two windows and a third window in the bathroom. When staying here, keep in mind the hotel was built in the early 1900s before air conditioning and modern heating systems were invented! The heating was a little loud when it first kicks in, but not so noisy that it prevents you from a pleasant sleep. The floor we were on was quiet, and we both got a solid night's sleep.
Along with a discount dinner coupon, we dined at Nathaniels right at the hotel. The food was scrumptious, the staff extremely efficient and polite. The menu offers "demi portions" which are large enough for dinner. They even sent out a "gift from the kitchen" a sample of a mango, goat cheese, strawberry, & orange appetizer. It was a gourmet taste sensation! The creme' brulee for dessert --- yummm!
In the morning, we had a "continental breakfast" which consisted of fresh fruits, yoghurts, coffee, cold cereals and hot pastries with walnuts. A great way to start the morning!
We could go on and on about the food, but the thing that stands out the most was the service staff ---everyone was helpful, polite, and very friendly!
We will definitely return to this hotel!
