Day one.
We arrived in Savannah/Hilton Head airport a little bit behind schedule. There was a problem with our connecting flight where the pilot was MIA. This took about an hour+ to resolve and made it to our destination.
We picked up our rental car (Chrysler - Sebring! pretty fun) and made our way up I-95 and then down I-16 to the city. And then turning the corner onto Oglethorp Avenue, we made it to the
Thurnderbird Inn .
I'll take a few seconds now to describe this place. The Thunderbird Inn was REALLY well priced for being in downtown/Historic Savannah. There really wasn't anything upscale about it, but it was clean and all the staff was nice. It's situated about a block away from all the action and was filled every night. Let me make one complaint about the inn - If you're sleep sensitive and have an early bedtime, you might want to pass. Guests were loitering outside till about 11 or 11 on Friday (which I know isn't really anything), which made it a little challenging to fall asleep - UNTIL we turned on the fan, which drownded out the chit chat. By no means was this a nightmare situation - but when you're used to living in a quiet suburb, a good bit of noise requires patience.
The continental breakfast was a little skimpy, but we were introduced to a new treat - COLACHES. What's that you ask? It's a a Czechslovakian pastry. Basically it looked like a dinner roll, with a dimple on top, filled with pie filling, like a mini danish. They were pretty tasty.
After settling in, we walked down to City Market, a touristy town center area of the city. Plenty of people were milling about, and we were simply amazed at how warm it was (compared with 40 degrees back home). Dinner was fine
