Grand Canyon

ImageThe only way to describe the Grand Canyon is only in one word: breathtaking. Although the drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon was a long one, going down historical Route 66 was fantastic. We left fairly early in the morning but still only managed to get there well into the night.
We'd also stopped at a few ma and pa restraunts and shops along the way and were fascinated by the history each person gave us. An older couple even mentioned meeting some pretty famous people--including Frank himself. We also passed through a Native Indian reservation and pulled off to a side road just to see some wild horses grazing in the pasture. They weren't the least bit bothered by us either but then such powerful animals could knock a person senseless in one simple kick. But it was truly very peaceful and a reminder of just how wild this country really is and how desperately we need to continue preserving it. We also seen a wild jack rabbit--big ears and all. Fast as the wind they are. By the time we did reach the GC park we were exhausted so we stayed in a nearby hotel (Holiday Inn Express) and planned our adventures for the next day.

Talk about this trip (10)
We just got back from 2 days roaming the South Rim. I would suggest getting to a few of the points early in the day, like before 8 AM. Crowds picked up after 9, and in the summer, I would not want to think about it.

We will be staying in Flagstaff next year and driving to The Canyon, also may check out the train ride from Williams to the Canyon, also going to drive through the Coconino Natl. Forest and check out Mt. Humphrey/Humphrey's Peak at 12,633 ft. in Elev.

We have been to the canyon twice. It's awesome. You have some great pics. Would recommend using Flagstaff as your home base if visiting the south side. It's a railway and college town in one. Where else can you stay and hear the trains rumble by regardless of where you stay in town. Great restaurants, beer bistros, and a homey feeling from another time. We stayed the last time at Little America, a little run down in a quaint way but very nice. Make sure you travel down to Sedona while visiting the canyon. It's a very beautiful place with great restaurants. Also recommend Jerome as these people did.

We will only be visiting The Grand Canyon for a couple hours this June as we make our move across country from San Diego to Maryland. We're taking the 40 as we pass through. Any suggestions for the best vantage point and place for lunch to soak in as much as we can in a couple hours as close to our driving route as possible?

IM FROM NEW YORK .I SPENT 3 AND A HALVE YEARS IN ARIZONA. ON THE NORTHERN RIM IN HOLBROOK. WE SAW THE CANYON METER CRATER, PAINTED DESERT, PETRIFIED FOREST, AND CUPPAL MONTHS IN PHEONIX. WE ALSO WENT TO OLD TUSON, WHERE THEY FILMED A CUPLE OLD WESTERNS. I REALLY LOVED IT OUT THERE. IF YOU GO AGAIN STAY LONGER AND ENJOY LIFE WHILE YOU ARE THERE.ITS AWSOME.ALSO CHECK OUT THE MANMADE LAKE IN I THINK JOESEPH CITY. ITS HOOKED TO A BIG PLACE AND THE WATER THERE IS LIKE TAKING A NICE WARM BATH EVEN AT 6 AM ITS WARM INTHE WINTER MONTHS. HAVE FUN.

I spent eight days camping in the Canyon, and it wasn't long enough! Biggest suggestion is park your car at any store, restaurant, tourist center, and take the bus everywhere. It's free, it goes to all the biggest spots, and it is very regular, reliable transportation. The Ranger talks are always good. The Hopi house is beautiful. If you are there at sunset, take the Red bus to the top at Hermit's Rest.
