Country

We are a group of 4 women - 2 friends and 2 daughters, who like to travel. But the men don't. One of us is a single woman, and has gotten the others to travel. We all have different travel styles, some like to see everything, while some want more relaxation. Some are used to scheduled tours, others want the ability to sink in the local culture.
So, while it seems cliche to pick the usuals of Santorini and Mykonos, it fit the mix the best. More time in one place means the ability to see more, and relate to the area more.
The basic plan is one site a day, and then shop or wing it the rest of the time. Schedule the highlights, but leave time for the lowlights.

Any suggestions on what to see and do?

Any suggestions are welcome
Thanks

I posted a response the other day, but it seems to be missing. It looks like Mykonos and Athens are the only two locations we will have in common. But I do have a couple suggestions....You are staying a little longer in Athens, so I would recommend a day trip to Nafplio (there are a couple different spellings). It is an old Venetian town on the water. It is something like 900 steps up to the Venetian fortress, but it sounded like the town was overall picturesque, interesting, etc.
Also, if you are like me - after so many ancient Greece sites, they might start getting boring. Look at Lena's House and the Sea Captains house for Mykonos. They would be something different from the standard sites. I don't imagine they will take hours to go through. A friend of our group also highly recommended Delos (back to ancient sites).
Finally, watch out for when the museums & sites are open. They all have some different open times, especially in the off season; like Oct when you are going. So put a little planning into when to go to those places, so you know you can see them. The group I am going with likes to shop, so I try and keep an eye on that so I can let them know we can come back for shopping but the museum closes at 3!
Happy travels!
David
Sorry I haven't checked this in awhile. As for being uncomfortable as "an American" in Greece.....there is some truth. I don't know if it is Americans, or just tourists some people do not like. It was about 50/50 for us when we walked into a shop or restaurant on if they were going to like us, or be rude to us. Some of it is just the culture. I believe they have a more abrupt communication style. For example, while on the Acropolis, the different tour guides would yell at each other for talking too loud. A friend of mine who also went last year, said they did not really have any problems.
Patricia - if you want a romantic trip - I would highly recommend at least 4 days at the Hotel Semeli on Mykonos. The staff was nice, the hotel wonderful, beautiful, romantic. I wish we had stayed longer on Mykonos.
Mary - on Santorini - do not stay at the Volcanos Views. We were treated very rudely, and it is the farthest point from Oia where you can stay. (about a 20 minute walk to town)
For any hotel - I recommend a lot of research. Trip Advisor, Yahoo, etc. Our travel agent definately did not take into consideration what type of accomodations we were looking for. The hotel I researched and selected (Semeli) was great. The one she pushed us into (Volcanos View) was mediocre.
Check back soon. I'm going to add pictures and more notes from the actual trip!
Some people say that it is very hard without a guided tour because it is extremelly difficult to find the IT places without knoledgeble guides, others say it's not so bad, because the tours are rushed and we can't even go into the "famous" buildings. We are also planning on going to other cities and islands... There must be someone out there that know what they are talking about. Please let me know what you think. I don't want to get there and be rushed, but I don't want to get there with a child and be completely lost either. thank you so much.
I will be visiting Athens for 2 nights with my spouse. We have reservation at Dorian Inn hotel which seems very close to the metro station and in city centre. But we are confused how to transfer from airport to the hotel in cheaper way. I have been browsing many sites and they are giving all sorts of information about airport shuttle , limo services which we cannot afford. So, please help us. Thank you so much.
