Introduction to Bandar Lampung, Indonesia

Back to Bandar Lampung, Indonesia Overview

Occupying a stunning location in the hills overlooking Lampung Bay, from where you can see as far as Krakatau, BANDAR LAMPUNG is an amalgamation of Teluk Betung, the traditional port, and Tanjung Karang, the administrative centre on the hills behind. Local people continue to talk about Teluk Betung and Tanjung Karang, and when you're coming here from other parts of Sumatra your destination will usually be referred to as Rajabasa, the name of the bus terminal. There are few sights in town. The Krakatau monument, set in a small park on Jalan Veteran, is a huge metal buoy which was washed up here from Lampung Bay in 1883 in the tidal waves that followed the eruption of Krakatau, killing over 35,000 people on both sides of the straits. The Museum Negeri Propinsi Lampung, 1km south of Rajabasa terminal at Jl Abdin Pagar Alam 64 (Tues–Thurs 8am–1.30pm, Fri 8–10.30am, Sat & Sun 8am–noon; Rp500), houses a good collection of artefacts, including drums, kris, statues, jewellery and masks, plus some megalithic figures, unfortunately not labelled in English.
