I love going to Umi! Each time I go there i get more excited. We usually start off at the bar where the bartenders greet us with a warm welcome. Then whether we decide to head to the hibachi tables or just sit for sushi we are always satisfied with the gorgeous ambiance and the spectacular food. I suggest Umi to all my friends and anyone who wants to enjoy some entertainment with hibachi or to hang out and eat some incredible sushi.
Went there for my birthday a few weeks ago - Absolutely loved it - we had a very large party and took up 14 seats and had a wonderful time. There were children ranging in ages from 1 to 13 and they were entertained by the chefs and had a great time. The sushi was wonderful and food delicious. I will definately go back when we visit the area again. The atmosphere was fantastic a little modern retro twist, and was very clean. For the birthday they brought out a person with a large drum for the pomp and circumstance. We had a wonderful time - :) Thanks
amazing ambiance, the sushi is fresh and out of this world. great service. the hibachi and presentation of the food is superb. what a gem to have in the city of rochester. This place is reasonable and puts other hibachi restaurants to shame. Keep up the good work! i look forward to eating here again :)
Food is good but pricey. Service is not so great! The chefs are always awesome in the Hibachi area but the host (man) is very rude. I have been there with family several times & each time the same man host is always the same way. Not planning on going back there!!
Been coming here since February, usually once a week for lunch to go on my break. They have some really well priced and great lunch specials (2 roll special is my favorite!). We sat down a few times though and our servers are always wonderful; never had a bad experience-Han and Linda are especially great. Even the cashier/hostess who worked there was great, though I haven't seen her recently. She always had everything ready for me when I got there, right on time. The one time it wasn't ready right away I was offered a water while I waited and had a nice conversation with her.
However 2 weeks ago I went in for dinner and also decided to dine in for lunch instead of taking it to go lunch this past week. This time it was a different hostess (same one both time). She seemed completely disinterested, and rather rude. I think her name tag said Kayleigh. She barely said two words either time, which was such a change from before when I felt completely welcomed and was even given some suggestions with the menu. My friends who were new to the restaurant were completely put off by her. I asked my server if the other girl still works here and they said she's a bartender there now, so maybe we will opt to eat in the bar, which is VERY nice, next time.
The chef special rolls are amazing. One is certainly enough to fill you up for lunch. The Godzilla roll is one of my favorites, as is the Superman Roll. I want to try them all!
Don't be upset if your initial service is rude-I promise it gets better, and the food is certainly worth it. The only other complaint I have is that besides the lunch special, it is a pricey.
I don't think I can remember a time when I felt the urge to complain about a restaurant. I have been to UMI twice and the second time was not by choice, it was a friend's decision. I waited for about a month excited to go to this new Japanese steakhouse because I know that new places usually need to work out the kinks before they can really show you what they can do. We ate Hibachi both time and the service was terrible. The first visit was with my father and sister and we waited at the table for it to fill up with other families for about 40 minutes. I knew that being a small party we would be sharing with others but wasn't aware we had to wait for the entire table to fill up. Then when ordering a glass of wine they were out of the first two I requested, but our server did not tell us this until after the food was coming out. Also she seemed irritated when I asked a question on the menu and did not answer it after all. When the wrong appetizer came out and the wrong Saki she informed us we were still going to be charged for it since we took a drink and a bite from each. Another man at our table ordered a $20+ Steak and chicken meal bu had to eat only chicken because they ran out of steak( yes, he was still charged full price). Then finally when they brought out the wrong dessert I was about to take a bite and she swatted the spoon from my hand and said it was the girls at the other end of the table. She tried to serve this fried ice cream with a spoon full taken out to the little girl but the parents refused. After all this they did not have a manger on duty to speak to us and we had to pay for the wrong appetizer, the wrong type of Saki, and the dessert that was swatted from my hand. Oh and I forgot to mention they did not have a computer system in place to separate the checks so we had to make the uncomfortable transaction with strangers to decide how we were going to pay for this terrible service.
After a 45 minute wait on a Thursday at lunch for a sushi roll takeout order...yes takeout...lunch... I have to say the food wasn't bad but it was not a great value and nor did it in any way make up for the time wasted waiting for it. The atmosphere is ok, it gives a higher level of expectation than the food/value or service provides and though the hosting staff was friendly enough I sat back and watched as they seated a couple of costumers in the near empty main dining area only to not have been offered even a drink for a good ten minutes as the waitstaff sluggishly made their way to greet them. I could see no apparent reason for the extremely long wait. If I had not already paid for my meal I would have left not bothering to return. Wholly unfulfilling experience.
