The Land capital SAARBRÜCKEN is a sizeable and predominantly modern industrial city which has generally been given a bad press. However, it is very much on the ascendant at the moment, its historical role as a melting-pot of German and French culture making it ideally placed to profit from the European Union's moves towards ever closer integration. It also has its fair share of visitor attractions, including a fine setting on a broad bend of the River Saar, a large array of handsome Baroque public buildings from its eighteenth-century heyday as a Residenzstadt, some good museums, a lively nightlife and thanks in no small measure to the French connection a distinguished culinary tradition.
