This is a lodge that is so amazing and I highly recommend this destination to everyone! Our trip was absolutely fantastic, from start to finish. And the food is most incredible. They have two "hot shot" chefs from the Bellagio in Las Vegas, and lets just say that dinner is a GRAND event. Although, i didn't fish the lodge was very accomodating and made sure that I had lots to do ( kayaking, float plane trips, and guided tours of the sights in town, and shopping). My husband, on the other hand, did the fresh water and salt water excursions. And as it turns out fresh water fishing is now his new found passion. Their fresh water guide is patient and an excellent teacher, and he has been featured on many TV shows with Dove Island Lodge. But the big thing I appreciated about the lodge was how friendly and helpful the lodge owners and their staff were with everyone that was there. It felt like a home-away-from-home! So, yes it was well worth the cost and the value well exceeded even my expectations. Can't wait to come back in 2011!!!!
This trip was the best vacation we have had. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to have fun fishing, bear watching, and fine food all combined in one trip. We had four days of the best salt water fising, catching 25-30 pound king salmons everyday, limits of choe salmon and yellow eye, and we caught a 60 pound halibit as well as our limit each day. The day we did the fly-out with fresh-water fishing was an awesome experience, from the beautiful sceney to watching the bears from 30 feet away, to the unlimited catch and realese of the salmon. Could not have asked for a better day. Each day ended with a five course dinner that was to die for, from the appertizers to the dessert, it was all so good. After dinner we went up to our suite with a private spa and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on (wish I had this bed at home). The owners, the staff, the boat captians, and the guides do everything to make this vacation the best vacation experience one could possibly have. We now sit and look back at the pictures of our trip and wish we were back there. We would go back in a heartbeat.
The first night in Sitka was spent at the Sitka Hotel which
by most standards is a few steps below Motel 6. I had begun to worry about the way our fishing adventure was beginning. We were picked up by Dove Island staff the next morning at 5am and went to the island which was a complete turnaround from where we had been the night before. Very pleasant staff and accomodations were excellent. Fishing was outstanding and the lodge food was fresh and very good.
I would diffently go back to dove island in the near future.
The first thing I noticed from the moment I stepped onto Dove Island was the total peace I felt. The seclusion makes you feel all the more like the staff is there just for you, and they are. The staff attends to your every need if possible. The lodge remindes me of a comforable family cabin. The food is the best and freshest ( usually caught that day ) seafood I have ever eaten. I had lived in Alaska on and off for 11 yrs., so thats saying alot!!. Dining is an event and the owners and staff create an atmosphere of laughter and tranquility. Bragging about the big fish you caught that day,and may be having for dinner, is encouraged. The fishing is the best you will ever see anywhere. From going out on a day boat, an all nighter, or the grand experience of a fly in fishing trip, you will find the staff know where the fish are ON every time. Halibut, Link cod, Snapper, Trout, and the mighty King Salmon give you a different experience every time you go out. If you need a break, you can sit in the quiet, peacefull woods or go into the town of Sitka and learn the local history and talk to the friendly local towns people. I could go on and on. I can't wait to get back and see Alaska and all it's glory again.
