Railway Dream
What a fantastic time we had. We did the Crawford Notch run which was chartered by a train club out of Maine. This was the last run to the notch for the year, so they made it extra special. First, they started with a steam engine which did some small runs, including unloading passengers at one point (if you wanted to) and doing a drive-by "photo-op". They then switched to steam engines for the ride to the notch and back.
This is typically done after fall foliage, but the colors were prolonged this year and were present for the ride. Plus, it had rained the day before, so all the streams and waterfalls were running full.
You stop at Cider Mill, where you can get cider, apple crisp, or cider donuts (get off amongst first if you can). There are other stops to stretch your legs.
The total ride for this special run is about 8 hours. We rode in coach and it was plenty comfortable, with great folks around us enjoying the ride.
Not sure if this is suitable for small children due to the length of the ride. But any adult who can relax with beautiful scenery and can spare a day, will love this.
