Pride of Saint Johnsbury
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/22/05
I had the privilege of relishing delightful paintings in the small Saint Johnsbury Athenaeum,a splendid work of Victorian architecture. I saw Albert Bierstadt's"Domes of Yosemite"and Bougereau's"Raspberry Girl" and I enjoyed them very much. This museum has fine Hudson River School paintings by Jasper Cropsey,Sanford Gifford,Asher Durand,Worthington Whittredge, and the Harts. This museum has fine nineteenth century European paintings by these relatively obscure, but adept artists-Eugene Verboeckhoeven("Sheep"),Felix Ziem("Venice"),Pierre Coomans("Aphasia"),Andreas Aschenbach("Shore,Schevingen"),Gabriel Max("Saint Ursula"),and Bazzani("Pompeian Interior"). This atmosphere in this pride of Saint Johnsbury is cozy and charming. Admission is free, but I gave them a small donation in support of their wonderful work.
