Ross Bridge
Description
Visitors to Ross should ensure that they stop and admire the craftsmanship of the bridge which leads them into this historic town. Opened in 1836, it is not quite as old as the bridge at Richmond, but it is distinguished by its remarkable carvings. Not executed by stonemasons, as might be expected, these carvings are the work of two convicts, Daniel Herbert and John Colbeck. The carvings of people and animals are unique in Australia, and although the convicts were at the end of the lash during their labors, their work was finally rewarded with their freedom.
