As Amy and I were just zipping up our last of five bags, we got a text message from Dana -- their initial flight on American had been cancelled the night before (thunderstorms or some such) and the airline had rerouted them through Dallas (that is, from Detroit to Dallas to La Guardia) with an arrival of 9:50 p.m., ten minutes before our Aerlingus flight left JFK. After some invective filled texts, and some ticket counter litigation, they managed to get on a flight direct to Newark, arriving at 5ish, plenty of time to make the several-legged bus transfer to JFK. My suprachiasmatic nucleus has already taken a hit (sorry, nerd moment), but I imagine if you talk to me in a day or so I'll have even more issues. Yesterday was a good start to the trip - sharing cheesecake with one's best friend and having complete and utter control over the radio/CD player (bwa ha ha!) is pretty much ideal in my mind. NO TIME TO LOSE!! With only a week to get to Ireland, drive to the Dingle Peninsula, shoot a travel video, edit it, and turn it in before coming home in less than a week, jet lag is NOT an option! So day one was the toughest. My wife/travel companion/photographer/production partner Romona and I arrived in Shannon at 11am from a JFK red-eye.
