Carmel Restaurant (The)
Serving up a melee of Hungarian, International and Jewish specialities, this restaurant has been around since 1987. The menu consists of dishes, such as duck leg with red wine and steamed pearl, cholent with smoked goose breast, veal escalopes with chilli and mussels, goose liver Hungarian style and many other choices. Push your palette further by tasting some of the local wine, from the various wine districts of Hungary. Kosher wine is also offered. The restaurant also plays host to small family functions as well as conference style lunches.
The place is a wonderful change from the everyday. A bit pricey, but the service and the food was excellent. If you observe kashrut (eat kosher only), you must go to this place once, if you are in Budapest
First I like to say the first review was a complete fabrication. This restaurant is strictly kosher and does not serve treif. I found the food was more than adequate in taste and the service was excellent.
This restaurant became Kosher in 2008 April and since that time I experienced sheer perfection in every area.. food, service, ambiance, value.. The waiters are really nice, so that you can enjoy your stay in a naturally beautiful environment while eating the best Kosher food in Hungary. I recommend it to everyone, it's a really amazing place, so you should visit it!
This restaurant used to be non-kosher. Although it sold many 'kosher style' foods it also had bacon etc.
It recently became glatt kosher (April 2008)
Cant tell you about the food because I have never eaten there so ignore my ratings
Traveled with family to tour Jewish Heritage in Hungary. Stayed in Pest for Shabbos. We brought along our own food as we are mephinicks and wont eat just anywhere; also we eat striclty kosher food. Friends told us about Carmel, but we didn't trust there info. We couldnt beleive that a restaurant with a combination of a strict supervisor and high class exists in Europe. We passed just to take a look... and there we stayed and had a gourmet Thursday night supper with a band playing. We reserved it for Shabbos... It was the most beautiful Shabbos outside our home. Food, Service, Quality is exceptional! This place is great!
I'm from London, and would like to add my view on the Carmel restaurant. I found the decor and the atmosphere very personal and fetching, with perfect service, and delicious food. I disagree with the fact that the restaurant is expensive, because I'm strongly convinced that the quality in all areas make up for the price. Additionally, the hekscher (Kosher signal) is even the best around the world, so I don't have it in for it.
I'm highly satisfied with the services provided, and would like to return at any time I'm in Budapest. I recommend it to all people if you have an urge for a top-notch place! I've had an exhilarating experience, I'm sure you'll have, too.
This is a place I truly loved.
Best regards, Adam
