People to People Encounter
Get the most out of your island stay & feel of the place by signing up for the Ministry of Tourism's people program. You will informally meet and spend time with Bahamian nationals, who are matched up with you or your group, according to your interests. The Ministry maintains a comprehensive listing of volunteer local Bahamians who wish to participate. This is a delightful way to gain insight into the island's culture and hospitality from a less "touristy" perspective.
I loved the trip and the hi-light was my being teamed with a Nurse-Midwife with 8 children. I had worked in an ICU in the States and had an equal amount of children, plus I wanted to know how her working and family co-existed. I spent 4 days with her at both her work in the hospital and visiting her clients in homes, and with her family at their businesses. My Intensivist gave me many pertinant brochures on our Hospital, which were shared by all the Nurses' co-workers and Staff. Trips to the docks at the waterfront to pick-up fresh fruit and veggies her family sent her from the outlying Islands was an adventure. I learned many things about the Island's history, bus and taxi service, plus life on this Island. Just wonderful! Co-Passengers who were teachers were sorry they didn't hear of the Program because they said they would have signed up for it and had the School Department pay for their trip. Very smart move for them!
We spent a few hours visiting with one of the local primary schools. Our children got to see first hand the differences and similarities from their US based primary school. This was a wonderful learning experience for all!
