Straw weaving is big business in the Bahamas. If you don't believe it, stop by the three-story Plait Lady store in downtown Nassau, where hundreds of straw works are for sale. More than a thousand craftsmen located throughout the islands of the Bahamas, have their work displayed at the Plait Lady. If you want to see local artistry at its best, this is the place to go. In addition to straw bags, baskets, hats and mats, you can find other products made from clay and metal. Almost everything in the store is adorned with decorative straw work. This is a step up from the hectic Straw Market, but every bit as authentic to the Bahamas.
This is my husband and I's fifth year going to the Bahamas and we love it there. We always go to the Marina Village and visit the shops there. The Plait lady is one of my stops and I love her items, especially the angels carved out of conch shells. I pick some up every year for gifts. I love Dooney and Burke. Buy a bag every year. And, the restaurants are great. Carmine;s and Johnny Rockets are our favorites. Such fun.
Always go to the Fish Fry on Nassau Island too and Bay Street.. We always visit
Senor' Frogs too. Love the Bahamas!!!!
Not only does this quant shop stock straw items but also other gems to discover while exploring. My favorite non-straw items was a hand cream available in three fragrances and adorable note cards with pictures of the local scenery. The cards could easily be framed for display on your walls! I love this shop and the little outdoor mall where it is located across from the Atlantis Hotel.
