A LESS THAN ENJOYABLE DINING EXPERIENCE
By SM, 3/26/12
= On Friday March 23rd we had dinner at Graycliff, which was highly recommended to us by friends. Our family was looking forward to the experience as the website and our friends described. Unfortunately the experience was one of complete disappointment. Upon arrival, 8:05 for 8:00 reservation, we were escorted straight to a table and not seated in per your description and offered to other guests. Our drink orders were taken as well as dinner order, wine and cigars were offered and ordered as well. After appetizers and drinks it was almost 1 hour before we were informed that 2 of our entrees "fell off the tray" and were being prepared. Finally at 10:15 we received our entrees which were terrific but given that we had not eaten since lunch hour we ate hastily and canceled the souffle at which time our server said it was ready and it was brought out as we finished. We ate quickly and while the souffle was offered gratis, a fair gesture given the experience, we felt nothing but aggravation at the situation. We are fine with the price for a good dining experience and food but it was generally awful and we would not recommend this place to anyone. One highlight was our server who was pleasant and I believe felt terrible about the situation but was handcuffed by a situation out of his control. I did not feel the manager or maitre'd made any attempt to intervene or even reach out with apologies. A truly frustrating experience.

McDonalds with a liquor license.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/24/11
I have been going to Graycliff restaurant for years and my experience has always been excellent, rating it to be the best restaurant in the Caribbean. That was including St Barts! Before we went last time I made dinner reservations three nights in a row there. Then I read some of the negative feed backs and was, to say the least, shocked. But then came the trip and the disappointment. It seems that the negative comments have really been based on bad food and very bad service. I have to agree. Something has changed there. It is not what it used to be. To me Graycliff does not exist any more. It is on the same level as many many bad restaurants in the Caribbean. For those looking for a change - try The Wall House on St Barts. That has been consistently excellent over many years.

Don't waste your time, stomach or money
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/1/11
We were excited to enjoy a nice evening at the only 5 star restaurant in the Bahamas. Where to even begin....first, for a restaurant which is known for its wine, they didn't any of the bottles we wanted available. Eventually, we just asked the sommelier for two glasses of wine. You'd think, after a discussion about wine, he would come back and tell us what he was bringing us. Instead, a waiter just brought us two half full glasses and didn't bother to mention what we were drinking. Our entrees, aged steak and a lobster tail, were both overcooked. The steak was supposed to be medium rare, it was closer to well done. The lobster tail was chewy and lacked any kind of flavor. When you're paying $50 for a piece of steak or lobster, the expectation is that it will at least be cooked correctly, let alone with some flavor. When it came time for us to pay the bill, it took them over an HOUR. They first said the credit card didn't work. Then after giving them a different credit card, they said the credit card machine wasn't working (after 45 minutes of us just waiting with NO ONE telling us what the wait was). Eventually, after we had to go find a waiter (any waiter, mind you), they told us they'd have to just do it manually. They couldn't have done that earlier? We should have just walked out without paying. As if that wasn't enough, one of our party was ill from the food for the next 48 hours. Overall, we dropped nearly $300 on a forgettable, mediocre and illness-inducing meal. Never again.

Excellent Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/27/11
I simply don't understand some of these comments. My wife and I went there about a month ago. We are considered "food snobs" by many of our friends, but we simply like good food. This was an exceptional meal. Both our meals were expertly prepared, and the service was phenemonal. While the price was extremely high, it is something we would do once a year. I would rate it up there with some of the best restaurants we have been to around the world.

Rehearsal dinner/WEDDING DINNER
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/14/10
I loved the atmosphere of the place. The vintage style brings you back to a time when life was simple yet grand, and people enjoyed food, wine and love to the fullest. The service was great. A lot of people say in other reviews that it was slow...but any fine dining takes time. The drinks were plenty and came quickly. The food was prepared beautifully, and custom orders were welcomed for dieters. The steaks were out of this world and the pasta dishes were devine. The deserts were great, and the waiters were extremely friendly. After we finished out meals, we went to the parlor and enjoyed the live entertainment. The lady sang beautiful love songs while we finished our drinks and desserts. I would remcommend this place to anyone. It was beautiful! Just know that the service is great, it just takes time to prepare the food. Take it easy and enjoy the people around you. Have a drink and soak it all in...or get a cigar made for someone or yourself in the entrance area. It was one of the most wonderful nights with my family and fiance. Thank you Graycliff Restaurant and Staff! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

More than a a meal...an experience
By James, 9/10/10
We travel the world 1/2 of each year. I found the Graycliffe 3 decades ago and it has been able to maintain its old charm an atmosphere throughout. As can be seen by some of the comments here, it is NOT for the nouveau riche looking for yet another upgraded version of McDonalds.with a liquor license. They should be restricted to Paradise Island. It is a peek into the Islands as they were at their best..when Hemmingway could be found in the bars and and life moved slowly.

The BEST of THE BEST!
By Jason G, 4/13/10
I'm shocked at the reviews on this page. I have been going to Nassau from Tampa for YEARS and have been to the Graycliff more than 50 times and those were the 50 best meals I have ever had. Yes, it is OLD, very old. I guess if you are used to Atlantis (the food there suck out loud by the way) and you are impressed by the newness of the place. The White House buys their cigars from the Graycliff as well. They have one of the largest wine cellars in the world (have to ASK for a tour). This place is EXCEPTIONAL in every way. The SAME PEOPLE have worked there for over a decade. The food is second to none. I have traveled all over the world and if you go to Nassau, you MUST dine here. My wife and I are going to Nassau April 19-23 (2010) and we will eat at the Graycliff EVERY NIGHT we are there. The ambiance is wonderful, you will have no less than 5 servers taking care of your every need. Tour the place next door (Humidor) and eat there as well and tour the cigar factory. If you are familiar with true fine dining, you will be happy with the Graycliff. The ones giving bad reviews on this page probably think Outback Steakhouse is a good meal. This place is exceptional and I will take pictures and post when I get home.

This "5 star restaurant" deserves 0.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/2/09
The restaurant's own advertising lauds it; someone is resting on their laurels here. Yes, the historic building has charm, but that is where any good experience ended at Graycliff. Service was attrocious. We waited well over two hours for our orders to arrive. Meanwhile there were far too many waiters with nothing else to do but run around refilling our wine and water glasses. The cheese plate was unattractive, consisting of a few cheeses, without a whole lot of variety, and a few pieces of fruit and crackers dropped onto the plate; and this cost $30. When dinner finally arrived, several were not what had been ordered. My steak, advertised as being aged on premises for over two weeks, was disappointing; I've bought better cuts of beef at grocery chains. I didn't finish it. My wife's sea bass was served on foil, a personal turnoff (as it would be to anyone who has dental fillings). It was barely warm. She didn't finish it either. By the time three hours had elapsed and our desserts had not arrived, we and our party of about twenty people left. All I heard on the trip back to the hotel was how miserable a dining experience everyone had had. By the way, prices were high. Graycliff was a waste of precious time and money on our vacation in the Bahamas. Yeah, I'm bitter about that.
