8/7/08-8/9/08 - The flight nearly took 2 days. I got on the flight from JFK at about 10 and made a stop in Vancouver for a couple of hours, then continued the flight to Hong Kong International Airport and transferred to a Tokyo flight. Crazy, right? We finally reached Tokyo in 2-3 hours from Hong Kong. As we're heading to the Hilton Narita Hotel, I had a great feeling about this trip already. The country side seemed so surreal and peaceful. The hotel is really nice. Headed downstairs for food. We either had a choice for Japanese food or Chinese food. We're in Japan, of course! We arrived in Tokyo around 4:00, and took the limousine bus to our hotel. The Kudan Kaikan hotel is just outside the grounds of the Imperial Palace. By the time we arrived, however, it was too dark to see anything. We showered and went to eat in a small restaurant with amazing food. I could not tell someone how to get back there, but it was very good. It was one of those places where it helped to have a native for translation, so maybe we had an experience that many Westerners would not have had. I thought that I was pretty good with chopsticks, but it's a whole new ballgame when you are eatin...

We took a Boeing 767-400 from IAH-HNL. Nice ride over, a little bumpy over Palm Springs and LAX, but after we got off the coast it smoothed out. Once you get out over the Pacific, the flying is very relaxing. With the technology we have now, once we get off the coast and out of radar contact, we check the HF (high frequency) radios to make sure ATC can call us if necessary. After that, all communication with Air Traffic Control is done by CPDLC--Controller Pilot Datalink Communication.
