National Museum & Art Gallery

Description

The most amazing and memorable collections are housed at the National Museum. Some include depictions of Trinidad and Tobago's national festival, Carnival, life during World War II, and artifacts from the country's earliest settlers, the Amer-Indians. There are also displays by leading local and international artists as well as thought-provoking exhibitions put on by the museum itself.

kind staff member
By ,
I took a student to the museum for a project- and was really surprised and touched by the help of Mr. Keith Dwarika. This professional really exemplified world class standards of what museum staff should be like. He sent the message that the museum belongs to the people and he went out of his way to facilitate the learning process. In our country this level of assistance is as rare as some of the pieces on display! Thank you Mr. Dwarika!

A must see
By ,
I really like the expositions and the building itself. It truly transported me to the past. I found particularly interesting the collection of items from WWI era, and the famous British Martini-Henry rifles. A must see if you come around Port of Spain.

A little balance!
By ,
Indeed we have proven that our country has alot of collections and events to display but with little balance it says less. Upon visiting the museum it becomes quite monotonous as you progress through the building. Starting from the building itself we need a little more amusing displays, intellectually position to interfere with the senses of the viewer and architectural work on the facility. It should be an experience that raises your adrenaline at each presentation. We can definitely represent our history better than this with a little more interaction and proper sequencing as you move along. Space is to cramp which allows everything to seem so cluster making it easy to miss an item.

Disappointing
By ,
So much about the history and culture was missing. Exhibits were placed haphazardly and not in a consistent time line. There were also no proper explanations for the exhibits. Having studied West Indian history for seven years, I could have gotten more information out of a primary school textbook. The saving grace was the Leroy Clarke exhibition on the second floor.

dissapointed, T&T can do better
By ,
The fine-art exhibition, with the exception of a handful of pieces, are of sub-standard quality, and poorly displayed. The space is inadequate for allowing one to appreciate the works of such artist as Leroy Clarke. Pieces need to be constanly rotated Many of the natural science pieces are beyond their exhibition life and should be replaced. The historical exhibit has the potential to be very educational to the viewer if accompanied by addequate text info and indexed photographs and maps. We can do better.

Worth the visit
By ,
The National Museum and Art Gallery was a great introduction to Trinidad. The exhibits on the first floor really gave me a good perspective on the growth of the people, industry, and culture within T&T. I agree with the other reviewer, that the art on the second floor was great. Also, a must to mention, is the Carnival exhibit on the first floor...very colourful!
