Illumination of The Falls
If the thunder of the Falls isn't enough to stir the soul, then this display of lighting legerdemain should definitely do the trick. Operating on the auspices of the Niagara Parks Commission, the nightly illumination features 21 xenon lights with 18 in the Illumination Tower near the Queen Victoria Park area, and three opposite the American Falls. How bright are these lights? One spotlight gives off 250 million candlepower! That's quite a step up from the first lights used in 1879 with an illuminating power of 32,000 candles.
We drove to up to see the Falls from Arkansas in May of 2008. It was the most beautiful and peaceful place i've ever been. I loved it! I recommand everyone going to visit the Illumination of The Falls @ least once in their life!
The Falls are beautiful, especially the Horseshoe Falls, but the illumination is so far away the colors are dilute and not as vibrant as the postcards show. I wonder if it is better in the winter when there is less mist and more ice to reflect the color? Since I have only visited in the summer months, I have never seen the falls during the winter season. It was a bit disappointing, however it is still worth seeing. In my opinion, I like seeing the falls the BEST on a Sunny day when you can see the Rainbow! To me, that is better than any artificial illumination.
The nightly illumination of the falls is a great free attraction and when they have fireworks, it is great, however, the pictures, posters & postcards we all see of the brightly colored (almost neon-colored) Niagara Falls does not exist in today's world. Once it gets dark, you can tell that there are colored lights on the falls, but they are nowhere near as awesome as the used to be. I have gone to Niagara Falls every year since I was 3 and it has gotten worse every year. If the night and water are both very clear, it is a little better. Make sure you go when there are fireworks to make it worth your while.
If they're going to light the falls, then keep them lit until the sun comes up. At any rate, the colors detract from the natural beauty of the water. The only colors we need are the naturally occurring ones from the rainbows that are created when the sun hits the mist. Now THAT'S magical.
Niagara Falls is an awe-inspiring site. It's cool that they light them up at night so that you can continue to enjoy them after the sun goes down. I'm not a world traveler so I don't know if there's anywhere else in the world where you can see falls of this size lit up at night. But I, for one, appreciate living close enough to these gorgeous falls to have witnessed them in person.
Was a beautiful! Loved it,i recommend everyone to go see the falls @ night. you do get wet so i hope u like water. It's a mist feels so good. There are tons of tourist there so be paitent when walking around.Things cost alot.
