Shangri-la - Midtown
Shangri-La is a restaurant in Detroit's Midtown that specializes in authentic and Americanized Chinese cuisine. Although Shangri-La does offer regular a la carte service which is popular, the main way to dine is Dim Sum. Get a table and watch as plates full of food pass by your table on carts ready for your selection. Particular favorites include the dumplings and the hot and sour soup made using black vinegar. Shangri-La also has a full bar including a good selection of sake.
Yuck. This place is suffering from more schizophrenic personality disorders than gay crackhead hustler Abrentus Allen. Kind of like the places in Metro Detroit that serve chicken wings, ribs, pizza and vacuum cleaner parts, Shangrila doesn’t know what it wants to be. There’s Pad thai on the menu, hot and sour soup and a sushi bar. Sure it’s all Asian but even George Bush II had different foreign policies for North Korea, Japan and China. Are all Asians alike? Given my history of getting booted off this website, should I even think that? Well, me and my buddy showed up here last night, and I was kind of excited since the Asian food in detroit really sucks (with the exception of Edamame Sushi a small Japanese dump at john r and 12 mile which is completely fabulous) and I’ve been at this place in all its previous guises and I had no idea that this one was Chinese. Well, the arrival of the plasticine menu was warning number one. Is this a take-out joint or what? Just add some photos of the dishes and the deal would be complete. I had sesame chicken, hot and sour soup and a spring roll. It was ok. The cruise I got from the half Hispanic half Chinese waiter was the most interesting part of the meal – and I’m not even fond of Asian men. We went to the Cass Café for after dinner drinks; that was nice.
