Belle Isle Nature Zoo
Situated in the middle of Belle Isle are 20 acres (8.09371 hectares) of wild nature that was long known as the Children's Zoo. An elevated walkway takes visitors past large exhibits where exotic animals roam, including kangaroos, cheetahs and tigers. The Zoo also features many interesting nature trails. Belle Isle Zoo is a manageable visit for small children and a great short break for adults.
Unfortunatly the zoo was closed, but it was better than the Detroit zoo. The animals were well taken care of, the zoo was well maintained, they had the prettiest and healthiest looking animal. They had beautiful white tigers that were well groomed and a fun trail to walk on throught the exhibit. Detroit should look for more ways to keep the good thing they have and bring more attraction to the city, not get rid of the good things then get rid of the people. The zoo now looks like a forest dump!
The island itself is always beautiful. The Belle Isle Nature Zoo provides a peaceful spot to take the family for a very interesting time. The Deer Encounter is so nice. They have several feedings per day. Or you can sit and enjoy watching the birds at the bird feeders and the bees in the beehive, plus so much more. Take a break and visit the BINZ.
It was a great place but alas like many other things here in our once great city, the Belle Isle Zoo is closed due to the citys lack of funds. Belle Isle itself is a wonderful place or once was. It was a jewel in the downtown area. It should have been made a metro park and then we could have saved it but the city fathers said no. The Detroit Zoo is in Royal Oak, a half hour drive outside the city. It is well worth the drive.
