A major cultural destination in since 1895, the de Young Museum re-opened in October 2005, newly housed in a facility designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and Fong & Chan Architects in San Francisco. The museum has world-renowned collections of American Painting, Sculpture, and Decorative Art; African Art, Oceanic Art, and Art of the Americas; Textiles and Contemporary Crafts.
The "new" DeYoung is the most horrendous architectural disaster imaginable. It literally looks like a bad design for a State Prison. Inside it is an endless maze of artificially lighted garbage Modernistic and Meso-American "art.."
I grew up in the San Francisco of the past...this harsh, minimalist insult has nothing to do with the great Park that John McClaren designed and that San Franciscans of any culture and self respect could possibly like....
I love the features of the museum. The artwork seems to date back to, at the least, 100 years ago. It's amazing how much the items in the museum are perserved. I enjoyed the Tower the most. You could look out and see all of San Francisco.
