I am very surprised to see positive reviews on this page maybe I went to the wrong place are there 2 vines in this town? Anyhow not family friendly waited for 20 minutes to be seated with my youngest in my arms while the hostess talked on the phone with no people in there dineing area. I guess they value call in orders better then dining in. All of it over priced and not good. They should have just opened a can of chef boyardee might have enjoyed it better and I would have saved a good bit of money too. My note on this town is if your to lazy to make dinner then plan to drive to clovis or eat mc d's or bk or the best shake place in town that place is good.
I really wanted to enjoy my meal at The Vines Italian Restaurante because there are not many restaurant choices in the Clovis/Portales area. The people were friendly and the restaurant was very nice! Unfortunately, the food is overpriced and not tasty at all! Breadsticks were overcooked and so was the pasta. The food sat for a while before reaching our table so the chicken and noodles were tough and dry.I did enjoy the soup but the portion size is smaller than what I have seen in other restaurants. We asked to speak to the chef and he apologized and explained he was short staffed and didn't expect so many guests on a Saturday night... We didn't want an excuse, I guess we hoped that giving him a heads up on the quality of his cooking would make him realize that he needed to pay attention to detail and not serve poor quality food to customers. I really hope that the Vines can find a chef who can actually cook real authentic italian cuisine because the quality of my dinner tonight was the same quality I would get going to a Fazoli's!
Food was excellent. I had the special of the day a flatbread w/eggplant,sausage,roasted red pepper and pesto. Soup was a rather small serving, but tasted ok. Service was a bit abrupt, maybe because we had a small child with us. Didn't offer appetizers, just cut to the meal orders. Other than that the food was hot and fresh. Compliments to the chef. Food was Excellent. Definately going back again and again!
Vines was a great find in the middle of downtown Portales. We were blown away by the upscale decore and service. The food was definitely tasteful and well-prepared, but not too fancy, which is kind of we expected on the menu. The price of the meals were very reasonable. The spinach lasagna was tasty, Italian sausage spicy and fresh, bread sticks were good with the dipping sauce, and even the pizza crust was very good - not stale like some places, chewy and not too dry, you could tell they made it fresh. The only complaint we had was we ate too much food and the waiter was always hovereing, and we would like to see them use a lot more seafood (yes we are in beef land but we need seafood) and maybe add some whole meal salads like at Cheesecake Factory. Now that with a good glass of wine would be perfect. Having said this, compared to all the other places we have eaten in Clovis and Portales, and to many places in Lubbock, Vines is either #1 or #2 in the area with Cattle Baron being the only other place that matches Vines in service and food in a decent atmosphere.
Vines..... liked it because of the great atmosphere, servers and charming decor. Would have loved it if the pasta were made fresh in house and not over cooked. The bread and dipping sauce was the highlight of the meal. If you can not make your own pasta, please, please learn to cook pasta al dente because your sauce was very good.
Since my original review was deleted, let me make a brief new one. Overpriced, rude service, boring and basic food. The decor is very nice, and its certainly fancy for Portales, but save your money on something worth it.
Well, Let me tell you about Vines... When I first entered this establishment. I thought of venice the Rialto bridge. This hotel in Venice is an ideal combination of old world charm and modern comfort, set in the heart of the old town, for an amazing Italian restaurant with great atmosphere, better service, & delicious Italian food go to Vines they have that Old Italian Feel! It's one of the best I've had. Ive never been wowed. The pastas are about $9-16 per plate and well worth every penny! My wife and I had lunch there today and I was truly amazed with the service, quality, and food! The server was delightful, very knowledgeable, today I had the Meat Lasagna Which was !!! OMG!!!! My wife had the Chicken Alfredo which she said was absolutely creamy but yet very comfortable... Which means she enjoyed it! We both Thought of the Gondolas taking us away on a fantastic voyage with Perry Como steering the Barge! We are from Artesia NM and Italy was our dream vacation. We lived it and now we live it here finally in New Mexico. Way to go Vines ! Kudos to server and staff! PLease keep up the Great work! -GIGI
Its great to see a nice Italian restaurant in Portales. We tried it twice, once during the second week and once again on the 4th week. On our last visit we were greeted promptly and seated quickly. The service was flawless and the food was good down home Italian food. The presentation was very professional and the atmosphere was classy and clean.
The salad had fresh lettuce and good croutons and just enough dressing and parmasean cheese. The pasta with Italian sausage was spicy but not overwhelming, and the sausage quality was excellent. Everything tasted fresh and we had none of that burning aftertaste of some places in Clovis or even Portales. The chicken parm was equally good, and the breadsticks with herbs were a nice touch. Then we were offered dessert and chose the Italian Wedding Cake, which was huge but not too sweet. We could have eaten less bread.
The decor and atmosphere is way more professional than anything we have seen around here, even a bit nicer than a similar place, Cafe J in Lubbock. We were so sick of dirty or poorly served restaurants in the Clovis area and so we were happy to be at Vines.
Overall, for the first month Vines are hitting it big and obviously working out the bugs. 5 stars for being here in Portales/Clovis and doing homemade Italian food right. We disagree about wanting a chain Italian place- Vines is just fine.
