Jungle Island

Description

A delightful place for the kids as well as adults, Jungle Island is a great way to spend a day outdoors. Located just minutes away from downtown Miami, the park is full of birds and animals. It was started by Franz and Louise Scherr, who wanted a place for their birds to fly free. Today the park is also home to many animals such as penguins, orangutans, crocodiles and even tigers. There's also the Treetop Ballroom where nature fans can have their events, planned to the last detail by their in-house staff.

Absolutely Amazing
By Mary G, 9/20/12
My title says it all. My husband and I went to Miami for our honeymoon this past weekend. I had been to Jungle Island before and was excited to go back again. we decided to do the VIP tour because I love animals and love any chance to get close to them. We decided to have the photographer follow us along to take pictures and I am so glad we did. She was able to catch those very special moments that would have been lost. We started off in the lemur room and dont think I have ever had so much fun in my life. Let me just say Lemur's are nutcases in the absolutely best way. Actually the whole tour was fun. Our tour guide Ryan went above and beyond to show us things that werent included with the tour. It was a slow day so what should have been a 90 minute tour ended up a 4 hour one. We did so many things that I would never have the courage or chance to do in real life. I have had a life long fear of snakes, but they made my husband and I feel comfortable enough to get our picture taken with their huge Burmese Python. Ok, I still have a fear of snakes but it was amazing to hold it. We ended the tour by petting the crown on the neck of the Andean Condor. It is an old South American legend that if you are lucky enough to pet an one that it will bring you good fortune for life. Sports stars and movie stars from around the world come here just for the chance to pet it. I would love to put details of everything that we did on the tour but I could fill a book. So I wil just say on thing, DO IT, because it is something you will never regret and you will come back with a new view on animals and the conservation that is put into saving some of these precious creatures from extinction

Ridiculously expensive
By Leo, 9/3/12
They'll try to charge you for everything. There are no drinking water fountains. Pictures cost from $25 to $59. Parking fee....$8????? (they won't mention this in their website) Really small place, you can see everything in 1 hour. Tickets plus parking for a family of 4 is about $125. Definitely not worth it.

Save your money
By Christina, 12/3/09
My family and I were excited to try out Jungle Island since none of us have ever been. We chose Thanksgiving weekend to go there. From the moment we got to the door, already we were experiencing problems. I have a 15 month old daughter who is an extremely picky eater. She is extremely underweight and will not just eat anything. I brought with me some snacks for her to have during the day. As soon as we approached the gate, we were asked to have our baby bag searched. Once this manager searched our bag, he informed us that we had to leave the snacks in their office at the front of the park. I informed him that my child needed these snacks if we were going to be here all day. He told me that I could come back to the front of the park anytime my daughter wanted a snack. I asked for a refund, and he said that the tickets are non-refundable. Not only is the parking $7 to go there, but there admission prices are not very cheap. All this money to not even be able to bring in some snacks! He began to give me there ever famously used story that the animals have died from others feeding them food. Well here's the clincher. I leave my snacks behind, I begin to walk to the area where there are parrots out in the open, and directly next to these parrots, I see a stand where you can by the same Doritos and chips that they have confiscated from everyone. Can you say money scam?!!! Wow, I told my family we are not buying a single thing here. I refuse to help this business by our purchases. That was unbelievable to me that they would tell me a sad story about parrots dying yet, they are selling the same snacks out in the open near the parrots. I went back to the front later, and sure enough, the same manager was not there, and others were getting in without any bags being checked. Whenever my family and I go to Disney or any other amusement parks, we always use our camera when the kids are with the characters. Here, when our son had the parrots on his shoulder, you could not use your own camera. Only the photographers there can take the picture with their camera so you can buy them. This place was pricey, greedy, and not worth the trip at all! Our family vacations a lot, and me coming from a hospitality background as well, have never seen such things. I will never go here or recommend to anyone. Save your money.

A RIPPOFF
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/23/09
The price is way to much to see a lot of parrots. You pay 30.00 a person plus 7.00 for parking. your better off going to the Miami Metro Zoo for 18.00 and free parking.

LOVED IT!
By Chelsy, 4/2/09
It was a great place to go and they CARE about the animals and most of the proceeds go towards protecting the m! Its much better than the zoo or aquarium. You see the animals just like you would in the wild plus there are many hands on activities and photo ops with the animals!

GREAT PLACE but TOO EXPENSIVE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/30/09
I am a local... so when I get bored I like to do touristy things that I dont normally do... so one day I took the opportunity to visit the "new and improved" Parrot Jungle Island... I thought the vanue was great!! It was beautiful and I enjoyed the shows too... great place to take young children or adults who think they are children... yes PJI is VERY EXPENSIVE!! I can tell you the reason for its high prices is because the rent there is EXTREMELY HIGH...but I can assure you that it is a great place :-D
