Gateway of India

Description

Easily Mumbai's most popular landmark, this yellow basalt arch was built to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911. Designed by George Wittet, this imposing structure overlooking the Arabian Sea, was opened to the public in 1924 and since then it's been on every tourist itinerary besides being a favorite meeting point for the locals. Many launches depart from here for short joyrides around the harbor or for longer ones to the Elephanta Caves. Touts, balloon sellers, photographers, peanut vendors roam around the place to give it a unique buzz.

Nice place
By ,
The Gateway of India was a rather "touristy" place but nice to see. There was not a lot to do here so no more than an hour is needed at the actual Gateway of India. You can take a ferry to the Elephanta Caves (must get there early afternoon to get last ferry. The ferry ride was beautiful and the caves were nice. There is some shopping along the MANY steps to get the caves. STAY AWAY FROM NATIVE WOMEN WANTING YOU TO TAKE THEIR PICTURE!!! These women ask you to take a photo of them but them harass you for money. They are scammers..stay away from them. The many steps to the caves were steep and took some energy so if you can hire the chair guys at the bottom of the steps you are in luck. You pay them to carry you to the top (sadly,I did not know this until I was ready to leave the island..I would have done this had I known sooner).

A feast for the senses
By ,
The Gateway of India captures many parts of the multifaceted life that is Mumbai. It's a clash of traditional Konkani fishermen, tourists, the wealthy elite of the city (the Taj Mahal hotel is nearby) the sharp tang of salt air. A MUST SEE while you are in Mumbai.

The Gateway of Indian should be respoected for its architectural design and for its historci representation of Bombay's colourful history. You can visit this place anytime during the year, while shopping in down town mumbai.

The Welcoming Monument !!
By ,
Saluting Arabian Sea from Southern Mumbai, is a greatest of Architecture, The Gateway of India. Been there so many times, but every times it feels so new. The Colaba area nearby is the best market to shop, some of the best chouvenirs and many Indian things. From Gateway One can catch Ferry for Elephanta caves which is altogether a new experiences. [Built in the Indo-saracenic style, the Gateway of India was meant to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay, prior to the Darbar in Delhi in December 1911. The foundation stone was laid on March 31, 1911 and George Wittet's final design sanctioned in August 1914. Between 1915 and 1919 work proceeded on reclamations at Apollo Pier for the land on which the gateway and the new sea wall would be built. The foundations were completed in 1920. The Gateway is built from yellow Kharodi basalt and reinforced concrete. The central dome is 48 feet in diameter and 83 feet above ground at its highest point. The whole harbour front was realigned in order to come in line with a planned esplanade which would sweep down to the centre of the town. The cost of the construction was Rs. 21 lakhs, borne mainly by the Government of India. For lack of funds, the approach road was never built, and the Gateway now stands at an angle to the road leading up to it.The construction was completed in 1924, and the Gateway opened on December 4, 1924 by the Viceroy, Earl of Reading.]

Gateway: Pro or Con
By ,
When I went in 1999, the Gateway of India, seemed like a monument that existed. i was so bored and felt like sleeping. Thanks to a special march that went on that day, it was a memorable experience. there is a taj hotel and many good restaurants to eat it. enjoy.
