Strand is one of the most well regarded and reader friendly bookshops in the city. Started decades ago, it pioneered a 'reading culture'. It's owner, Mr Shanbhag, was awarded Padmashri, country's highest award for his efforts and vision. Strand is a minuscule corner of a shop in the city's commercial areas; it will remind you of bookshops that have not moved with the times - for the better. The service is highly personal; you can pick the staff's brain no end about literature and they will continue to oblige. And of course, the collection of books, journals, coffee table books, magazines, etc is very extensive. Their big sale is a much awaited event in the city, where you get books at up to 80% discount.
