Earlier, the Hochkreuz was probably the most magnificent landmark on the way from Cologne to Koblenz. Today, car and train passengers hardly notice the wayside cross, which was erected as a monument for atonement in the 14th century. In the nineteenth century, it was restored in the New Gothic style and extended. Today, only a copy stands in its place, since the original was badly damaged by traffic. The original is under the care of the Rheinischen Landesmuseums.
